Oh, the fun that two feet can have with a round ball!
Many congratulations to the team; I hope that it pisses the CRAP out of the jihadis.
and I think how is that the Democrats could leave such hopefullness to genocide, there is in that face a look of hope that I believe is supported by many Iraqi's if given the chance to feel it. Congratulations to the Iraqi soccer team, they rock!!!!!!

Hotair linked to this story about the financial disparities between the two teams. The Iraqis flying in economy. The Saudis in their private jet.
The only people not celebrating today in Iraq should be investigated. They're either die-hard Shiite or Sunni militias who don't like teamwork or they're al Qaeda terrorists, who don't like men in uniforms that show bare arms and legs while playing an infidel game in a stadium where men and women sit together.
God bless the Iraqi players and people. Now they know what victory feels like.
Great news! Hopefully some enterprising sports program will put them on tour and crank out a special. For real.
Watch for Henry "the rat" Waxman peeing on the Iraqi parade by launching an investigation of US provided steroid use by the soccer team.
Ask not what you can do for your country, ask what your country can do for you. Washington Elected Elite
The team had Sunnis, Shiites, and Kurds on it. Apparently they were not murdering each other and figured out how to work together to achieve a common goal.
For those who don't know much about world soccer, this is a pretty big deal. The winner of the Asian Cup is guaranteed a spot in the Confederations Cup, which is an elite tournament held every 4 years that features eight of the top teams in the world (the 6 confederation champions, winner of the world cup, and the host country). The United States national team qualified for this tournament over a month ago by winning the CONCACEF Gold Cup.
So this isn't just a one time deal, it really puts this team on the global map for the next few years.
I do not follow soccer however I am always for the underdog in any sport because it shows desire and committment that is not necessary from the elite teams kind of works that way in politics in this country as well.......the similarities are amusing to say the least.
Right now the USA, Italy, Brazil, South Africa, and now Iraq have locked in their spot for the Confed Cup. Africa, Europe and Oceania still have to settle their cups.
A great win for Iraq. Hopefully for them that could help them in World Cup Qualification and they could be going to South Africa.

unlike the satisfactions visited upon losing teams by Saddam's sons. To be duly noted by our patriotic media, always on the lookout for the positive, standing behind America four square, and honest to the last bone in their noble bodies.

This is a classic story of the poor underdog beating the privileged champions. It could be a blockbuster movie just like "Invincible", or any number of other movies.
I know it is unlikely, but I'd like to think that someone is already drafting a script for this. It's too good not to do it....

the Saudi team has long sucked.
But they did beat Australia in the group stage who are a decent squad. And they beat South Korea in the knockout stages.
A pretty impressive run for them.

...of the movie "Miracle", about the US beating the Soviets at hockey. A determined team completely unified on the goal of winning with dignity.
I HOPE HOPE HOPE that this is something that will inspire people and help turn things around.
PS: I highly recommend the book Kite Runner. Caveat: it would be rated "R" if it were a movie for a few disturbing "scenes"
After the game, Mahmoud (the captain who scored the winning goal) called for the United States to withdraw its troops from his nation.
"I want America to go out," he said. "Today, tomorrow, or the day after tomorrow, but out. I wish the American people didn't invade Iraq and, hopefully, it will be over soon."
Mahmoud also said he will not return to Iraq to celebrate.
"I don't want the Iraqi people to be angry with me," he said. "If I go back with the team, anybody could kill me or try to hurt me."
You could have pointed to the statement by the team's coach:
"I have worked my best to give happiness to the Iraqi people, to bring a warm smile to their lips and my mission is accomplished," Vieira said. "The satisfaction is doubled when you can get this cup and you bring happiness for a country, not just a team. It's more important than anything."
You could have even pointed to what a Baghdad police officer said:
"The players have made us proud, not the greedy politicians," said Sabah Shaiyal, a 43-year-old police officer in Baghdad. "Once again, our national team has shown that there is only one, united Iraq."
I assume those expressions dom't quite fit so nicely into the template you want to promote. pfft

I'm not one to use sports to make political points and I don't think that the player's comments matter much.
But I really fail to see how these comments counter his comments in anyway.

But given the tone of your comments I doubt it has much value.
You countered "America, get out of Iraq" comments with "We love Iraq" comments. Those comments are not in conflict.
When your response is nothing more than an insult, you probably have no legitimate response.

I figured that was what he was talking about. I'll give some creativity points on the cartoons but the wit seemed like a not so good version of South Park. Reminded me of the South Park Wheel of Fortune episode.

I never posted to 'counter' anything. I posted to point out that in addition to the quote the poster highlighted there were other quotes that reflected not a counter point just thoughts of the victory as a great one for Iraq. Am I suspicious that those quotes were deliberately left out of his post because he has an agenda? You betcha!
"We should scrap this “comprehensive” immigration bill and the whole debate until the government can show the American people that we have secured the borders -- or at least made great headway."

My post was to point out that it seems we cannot win for winning. The first quote in the story linked was not from the coach or the policeman but from the hero of the game who used his 15 minutes to make a political statement. One step forward: the Iraqis win. Two steps back: America leave Iraq now, it is too dangerous there for the game winner to go celebrate at home.
The point of Erick's story is that Iraq won. Your pointing out a statement from the hero of the game had absolutely no bearing on the team winning the game. Look closely at the picture. Do you truly believe his political views had anything to do with his scoring the goal? Read Omar over at Iraq the Model especially this part:
"The win came through a magnificent goal by the head of our heroic forward Younis Mahmoud at the 71st minute of the match..
Our team ruled the game by all standards; in defense, midfield and attack our players proven that they are the best…they are now the masters of Asian soccer!
Today is definitely the happiest day for Iraqis in years. Tears of joy mixed with prayers for hope on the faces of millions of Iraqis…Words truly fail me and I can't describe the feeling so please pardon me if the post doesn't sound coherent; I hear the cheering and music outside although the bullets of celebration keep falling on the ground and roofs here and there. But no one seems to worry about that, the moment is so great that fear has no place in the hearts of the millions of fans, neither from bullets nor from crazy suicide bombers who tried to kill our joy last week.
Our players, tonight our heroes, learned that only with team work they had a chance to win.
May our politicians learn from the players and from the fans who are painting a glorious image of unity and national pride, and let the terrorists know that nothing can kill the spirit of the sons of the immortal Tigris and Euphrates.
The fear is gone, the curfew is ignored, tonight Iraq knows only joy..."
For Omar the political views of Younis Mahmoud have absolutely nothing to do with this grand sports event.

Viera isn't an Iraqi and was simply under a 2 month contract with the team. I'm not even sure if he's even been inside Iraq. He is expected to become the head coach of either the South Korean team or the Aussies shortly.
I agree with his sentiments though and he did a miraculous job to prepare this team for competition against much more experienced and talented teams.
