Red Tide Sweeps Mississippi

Last night, Mississippi and Louisiana finished what states like Georgia and South Carolina started. They succumbed to the Red Tide (no, dang it, not the Crimson Tide sucessfully beaten back last Saturday. Geaux Tigers!).
In Louisiana, in a historic defeat for the Democrats, Bobby Jindal made it to the Governor's Mansion without a runoff. In Mississippi, last night, the GOP picked up all but one state wide seats, returning Haley Barbour to the Governor's Mansion for a second term.
Like Georgia in 2004, this is a first for Mississppi since Reconstruction. The death of the Republican Party seems greatly exaggerated.

Have YOU helped to house, clothe and feed. That's right, you blue guys prefer to use taxpayer's money and then claim righteousness. Pretty easy way to call yourself a humanitarian.

Yeah, we obviously have some work to do to keep that from happening again. It doesn't look like you want to be part of that effort. I'm afraid you'll have to give up your seat. Follow the exit signs to your left.

you may be lucky enough to get a tax increase and bring the war to our shores, plus toughen enviro regs to the point where you will be riding a bike to work. Keep your fingers crossed loser. You're just the kind of sap the Democrats love.
And what else are you recovering from?

You better hope it does work. Regardless who's party is sitting in a state capitol it will not reduce the REAL terror threat that is facing this great nation. You better read up on the 12th Eman and the Terrorist stated goals of wiping out the West and Israel.
For you to think otherwise is foolish and very dangerous.
We need it to happen in Arkansas and West Virginia (border state). Though, unfortunately, I too think our gains in MS and LA are being negated by Virginia. Kentucky not so much (which seemed more like an anti-corruption vote than a realignment back to the Democrats).
Four state senate seats for a one seat majority in VA state senate (21 of 40), and one governor seat won by a conservative dem vs. a possibly corrupt rep appears more like a purple ripple. Did you see how anti-illegals the dems in VA were?
If the dems want to run conservatives, more people will vote for them, but the leftists' power still becomes somewhat diluted. Maybe the dems will go back to being a national party over the next decade. It would be smart. Especially since I still don't understand what the national republican party is trying to actually accomplish domestically.
I want more conservative, pro-life, pro-family Democrates to run; it means we conservatives will have more choices and it will force Reps to run as conservatives or loose, but then again look Rudy got Pat's endorcement today, so what the heck do I know!

Living in Va I can say that in the Northern areas it is going blue. But the vast majority of the state is still red (except city of Richmond and the Norfolk area.) These dems are winning as conservatives anyways. Kaine won as a conservative as did Warner.
The problem with this is that now that the dems control the senate, they can redistrict starting in 2011. But as for 2008, I'm more than confident VA will still be in the red column.
That Democrats are running Conservative Democrats to win, so what. That says Republicans need to do 2 things in Virginia
1) Either become more moderate, which many people won't want. If not risk turning the state more and more blue
2) Give Republicans more safe seats in the assembly in order to keep the conservative majority in tack and hope a firewall is created.
Finally, THE ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION DEBATE DID NOT HELP AGAIN. If immigration was people's top concern they would of voted for Republicans period. It sure didn't get Republicans to the polls and it sure didn't keep independents from voting for Democrats. New stratagy is needed period (of course this is coming from an economic liberal so you don't like my views on illegal immigration anyways).

Notice to All - I am an independent who has voted for Senator Bayh (Democrat) and Senator Lugar (Republican) along with over 60% of my state. You may take what I say with a grain of salt at your own party'
But its not as if Democrats are out there running as the pro-illegal immigration party. They are not (at least in places like Virginia) running on a platform for giving illegals drivers licenses and other public benefits.
The problem is that the generally conservative views of Americans is like so many other issues where Americans are generally conservative in that they are not necessarily top-tier, vote-deciding issues. I will readily admit that. Conservative views on immigration, marriage, abortion, the culture, etc, will take a back seat to Iraq, healthcare, the economy, and education, and unfortunately the Dems have an edge in almost all of the latter group.
If your point is that the GOP should not focus on illegal immigration, then fine, but surely you are not saying that they should adopt your leftwing views on immigration, are you? Becoming Ted Kennedy on immigration might win a few Hispanic votes (and it would only be a few, because the Democrats would already occupy that far-left ground), but it would not have helped the GOP in 2006, or this year, nor would it help going forward.
But no matter what some Republicans think you are losing the Immigration debate for a few reasons.
1) Democrats can run pro-enforcement people yet still not piss off the hispanic community, which in the long run helps them.
2) Democrats now control the Virginia State Senate and Federal House and Senate. They can pass "enforcement" messures, but water them down and be seen be everyone as supporting enforcement but not being hateful to Hispanics. That is what is happening.
Republicans don't need to jump to becoming Ted Kennedy, god I hope not, but Republicans need to be able to pass a bill that Democrats will support. Guess what Republicans not in power anymore and from my take Republicans are still going the wrong direction in State Elections and Federal Elections.

against illegals, conservative/moderate Democrats at least cover a couple of potential weaknesses (security and law enforcement), thus making it easier for moderates to vote for them. That is a very sound strategy. Where are liberal Hispanics going to go? Same place minorities went with welfare reform, back to the dems.
I believe the Republican brand has been damaged because the national party strayed from some important conservative traits and its message became inconsistent and even contradictory. This has made it harder for the state parties to do their job at the local level. The only thing that has saved it from getting completely clobbered is the fortunate incompetence of the national dem party in power for the last year. Here's hoping the republicans will use the grace period to get back on track, like they have started to do with keeping illegals illegal.
You seem to be forgetting the fact that dems retook the state senate and that there was no change in the state house. Real big tide there...
Winning the Mississippi governorship isn't exactly a red tide. Maybe if we actually did a dent in some of the blue states it would make a difference. Also, red states becoming bluer (Virginia) should be more of a concern then cheering on Mississippi, who have had the same republican senators forever.
Come on, we have problems and people need to acknowlege it and talk about ideas that can improve the future of the republican brand. Because right now it is in big trouble. Ideas, strategy, policy, competence-what do we stand for? This is what we need. And Pat Boone calling residents of Kentucky telling them it is going to be the next San Francisco is not and idea, sorry. It is a tactic, that obviously failed.
We lost 4 seats in VA, a governors Race in Kty and every big city election with the exception of Indy.
Your delusional if pointing to Mississippi is a barometer of the republicans futures.

[*OK, this one was impossible to properly parse: it was "be afraid of Muslims," which makes literally no sense at all, given that this administration and GOP has gone the precise opposite route (a route that I endorse, by the way).
