So, the Governor of Tennessee just handed out $1 million of Tennessee's taxpayer dollars to restore the Hermitage, Andrew Jackson's home. His off the cuff comment speaks volumes.

I am glad this video was posted Mr. Erickson.
As a Tennessean, I wish that all Tennesseans could view this video.
Gov. Bredesen wants with all his heart to receive a vice-presidential nomination.
Republican Van Hilleary would have made a great governor. I voted for him in GOP primary in 2002 and in the general election. Sadly, a majority of Tennesseans wanted Mr. Bredesen.
Bill Frist is running for Gov. in 2010. I doubt anybody will give him a serious problem in the primary.

My 'adopted state legislator Steve Gottwalt phoned me on his way back from St. Paul this winter. A DFL colleague of his, Cy Thao, made this statement to Steve:
““When you guys win, you get to keep your money. When we win, we take your money.”
If you think that's bad, it gets funnier:
The proposed 10-cent-a-gallon gasoline-tax increase moving through the Minnesota Legislature could end up being higher than that, maybe more than twice as high.
Tucked away in a big transportation funding bill being fast-tracked to a Senate floor vote today are future increases in Minnesota’s gas tax that could push it from 20 cents a gallon to more than 40 cents over 10 years, higher than any state’s current bite at the pump.
"I’m not trying to fool anybody,” said Sen. Steve Murphy, DFL-Red Wing, sponsor of the measure that would increase funding for roads and transit by $1.5 billion a year once it was fully implemented in the next decade. "There’s a lot of taxes in this bill."
When conventioneers visit Minnesota for the Republican National Convention, we want these types of statements plastered on billboards all across the metro.
I am not aware of any media exposure that this video has been given in Tennessee.
That's what the Democrats want to do all over this country... take it away so they can give it back... minus administration, research, and GP(whatever they dream up) costs...
I'll be so happy when they "fire" this man... unless we get us another just like him. If people thought Sundquist was bad, I wonder how they feel now. I loved Nashville when I first moved here. Beginning to hate the place lately.
It's still the best place I've ever lived and I'm staying.

because Sundquist was SUPPOSED to be a Republican. He governed as the most corrupt since Ray Blanton with his cronies getting contracts that were never let out for bid, taking money for services never rendered, and Sundquist worked hand in hand with the Dems in the state House and Senate to try to pass an income tax. He never forgave the citizens of TN for stopping him either. His parting shot was to have a stretch of state highway extended to benefit his privately owned land. He was really a disgrace as a governer no matter what party he came from.
...I do think that Gov. Bredesen is among the better Democrats in higher office. Maybe that speaks more about the Democrats in higher office than it does about him. But he doesn't make me ill the way that people like Gov. Spitzer, Gov. Granholm, Sen. Reid, etal do.
Unfortunately this guy just won re-election in Tennessee and became the first person to ever carry all 95 counties in Tennessee. By doing, so he carried some of the most Republican counties in the entire country by 20 and 30 point margins. Sad, very sad......
On the postitive, The CATO institue just gave him the highest rating (60 "B' rating) for any of the Democrat governors and only three Republican governors barely edged him out. Compare that with Gov. Huckabee's 46 "F" rating.
I grew up in Hermitage, Tennessee and I can tell you that talking bad about Andrew Jackson in Tennnessee is a real good way to get your a** handed to you in an election. Granted, he did start the Democratic Party, but he is very admired by a lot of people in the state.
As bad as this sounds, the only person that could beat Bredesen right now in statewide election in Tennessee is busy in South Carolina running for President. Hopefully, Bill Frist (Former Senate Majority Leader) will take over as Governor when Bredesen is done.
As president, he cleaned out those "marauding bands of barbarics injuns" from the hills...

for some reason, I don't find that off-putting. It's sort of a self-deprecating comment - he's is pointing out the irony of what he is doing. It's funny, the way he says it - sort of: "Isn't it strange, the world we live in?"
It's not nearly as nasty and menacing as the equivalent Hillary quote: "We’re going to take things away from you on behalf of the common good." - yikes!
Uhh, OK, so it sounded bad, but I honestly don't have any problem with the Government preserving historical sites. That seems to me to be totally legitimate, as it's something that's very difficult for the free market to do, and history is very important for the future of our country.

Yah, but it's obviously a joke. I mean, come on, it couldn't be more obvious that it was suppose to be a joke.

he made the statement in a context of how silly it sounded.
In my view, this speaks highly of the governor.
My governor, Granholm, has said something like "we need to get over the idea that it is your money" in the context of taxes.
I would trade governors in a second . . .
I live about 5 minutes from the Hermitage and it's quite likely that it would take a million dollars to fix the place up. Whether or not that should be a million TAXPAYER dollars or not is another question entirely. In any event, Bredesen is currently embroiled in a FAR worse abuse of the public trust.
The Bredesen family has never lived in the Governor's mansion since they own a home locally and there are problems with the mansion's structure as well. Bredesen's wife, Andrea Conte, served the people of the Volunteer State well by raising over $350,000 in private donations to renovate the mansion.
Unfortunately, that money was eventually put into another fund for the construction of a 15,000 square foot underground entertainment facility that some estimate will cost the taxpayers of Tennessee between $12 and $19 MILLION dollars! All that to upgrade a property worth about $900,000.
The real costs are an unknown as there have been no plans drawn up, no estimates given, no bids submitted - no nothing.
This was the case as of 3 weeks ago. The issue has dropped off the map since then though the last plan I heard of was to go ahead with the ground breaking despite overwhelming voter and local resident opposition. It may be that the situation has changed some, I'll look into it and get back to you all ...

It was mentioned on the news this morning but I didn't catch it all because the dog started barking and drowned out the TV. I was watching Channel 5... if that helps.
Van Hillary lost because he ran the worst campaign in modern Tennessee history. Big Jim lost because he was a sacrifical lamb with little support and money from the Republican establishment in the state. They had already decided that Bredesen couldn't be beat when he ran for re-election and didn't want to waste any of their big bucks. A moderate Democrat can win in Tennessee when the Republicans decide not to compete.

Let's be sure to give taxpayer money to the estates of James Buchanan and Chester Arthur, since you've decided to throw money at the worst presidents in United States history.
Jackson doesn't deserve one hundred dollars. Maybe twenty.
