Congressman Danny Davis and the Tamil Tigers (terrorists)

plus he knows the reverend moon, for what that's worth

Congressman Danny Davis (D-Illinois) and an aide traveled to Sri Lanka last year on the nickel of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam (LTTE or Tamil Tigers), a terrorist organization which, according to the U.S. State Department, "[b]egan its armed conflict with the Sri Lankan Government in 1983 and relies on a guerrilla strategy that includes the use of terrorist tactics."

The Chicago Tribune reports today:

Davis' seven-day trip came under new scrutiny this week following the arrests of 11 supporters of the organization on charges of participating in a broad conspiracy to support the terrorist group through money laundering, arms procurement and bribery of U.S. officials.

Davis denies knowing that the Tigers funded his junket, saying it was funded by an Illinois-based social organization, the Federation of Tamil Sangams of North America.

I know who I got the trip from," Davis said. "I don't know if any clandestine group gave them money. All I know is what I saw and was told."

Davis does, however, acknowledge that he knows that the Federation of Tamil Sangrams is associated with the terror outfit: "I knew that they were associated with the Tamil Tigers, yes." But no alarm bells? Has he told the FBI or the DHS of this association?

Since I have an interest in human rights and since I have a tendency to kind of favor the underdog, I went at their [Tiger-associated Federation of Tamil Sangams] request to take a look," Davis said. "I don't regret taking the trip. I have a much better understanding of the situation than prior to going."

I assume Davis doesn't know how the wad of cash arrived in Congressman Jefferson's fridge.

During the visit, Davis spent most of his time in a region controlled by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, as the group is formally known, and visited the organization's political headquarters. He also met with a police chief for the region appointed by the Tigers.

And we see what Davis "has in his fridge":

As recently as this past Saturday, Davis talked in Chicago with a supporter of the Tamil Tigers who was among 11 people arrested on charges of conspiring to aid the rebel group through money laundering, procurement of arms, including surface-to-air missiles, and bribery of public officials.

Davis is a bit close with Murugesu Vinayagamoorthy, 57, "a high-level operative who served as an intermediary between the Tigers' leaders and foreign backers" who is charged with attempting to bribe a State Department official with $1-million to pull the Tigers' name from the terrorist list. The "State Department official" in this case was an undercover FBI agent. Davis is tacitly in the complaint against Vinaygamoorthy:

Without mentioning Davis or his aide by name, the complaint describes transactions in which Vinayagamoorthy and others charged in the case allegedly laundered $13,150 in Tamil Tiger funds at the direction of a top guerrilla leader to pay for travel of "two individuals" to Tamil-controlled Sri Lanka. The two were Davis and Cantrell, law-enforcement officials said.

Okay, it's time for Davis to go. His Republican opponent in Illinois' 7th CD (Chicago) is florist Charles Hutchinson, whose web site is located on the freewebs.com server: www.freewebs.com/hutchinsonforcongress/. There is not a lot of hope there, but I did learn from the web site that, as the WashPost reported in 2004, Congressman Davis crowned the Reverend Sun Myung Moon, "Messiah." No kidding.

At the March 23 ceremony in the Dirksen Senate Office Building, Rep. Danny K. Davis (D-Ill.) wore white gloves and carried a pillow holding an ornate crown that was placed on Moon's head.

This certainly takes nothing away from the fact that Davis consorts with terrorists, but it might help put the man in perspective.

"I didn't know it wasn't my car..."

That flies in Davis's bizzaro world too?

"Took the nickname Troll long before BlogTrolls existed..."

Mr. Kilmer,

While it is true that in this district (IL-7) the Democrats can put up a Ham Sandwich, or even someone who doesn't want the job (Davis openly lobbied for the Cook County Board President job) and it will still be a huge challenge for any Republican, that doesn't mean that there is "not a lot of hope".

Yes, it is an uphill battle, but I offer hope to the people of Illinois, hope of a Congressman that will work for THEIR best interests, who will listen to them regardless of if they contribute to my campaign nor not, and hope of a better tomorrow.

I am running on a platform of Job growth in the district – unemployment in the district is higher than unemployment in the rest of the state. Poverty has also risen during Davis’ stint in Congress. I want to improve the education in our public schools. Congressman Davis sits on the education board, yet has not passed one single education bill in his 10 year, and Chicago has one of the worst public school systems in America. I want to increase Homeland Security and make sure that we are not vulnerable to an attack by rail (Chicago has the largest rail hub in the country) and I want to reduce wasteful government spending by supporting earmark legislation.

Davis not only participated in the coronation ceremony of Moon, it is reported that Rep. Danny K. Davis, D-Ill., the only congressman who has publicly expressed pride in the crowning ceremony. Among some of the quotes attributed to Rev. Moon:
"That gays are "dung-eating dogs"
"Jews brought on the Holocaust by betraying Jesus"
"the U.S. Constitution should be scrapped in favor of a system he calls Godism -- with him in charge”
So why would a sitting U.S. Congressman associate himself with someone like this? The answer is simple according to Davis “some Moon associates have donated money to (my) congressional campaigns..."

As if that weren’t enough, Congressman Davis willingly takes laundered money from an organization that he knows has ties to terrorists. Why would a sitting U.S. Congressman associate himself with a group like that? The answer is simple and repetitive “Federal campaign disclosures show that (a representative of the group that sponsored the Congressman’s trip) gave Davis a $500 contribution April 30, 2005, a few weeks after Davis returned from Sri Lanka”.

According to Danny Davis, the U.S. Congress is for sale. Anyone can get Congressman Davis to do anything – even associate with known terrorists, so long as you give him a few dollars.
