Overheard: The Democrats Discover a Brand New Strategy
How to succeed in politics without really trying

I hear that Democrats are striking their foreheads for not having thought of this sooner.
They're thinking of making it a misdemeanor to be a US Senator or Member of Congress.
Then all of the Republicans will be forced to resign. The Democrats, en masse, will announce that they deeply apologize, but that the offense has no bearing on their ability to continue doing the job the American people expect them to do.
Great plan, no?

Republicans have morals, and believe in the rule of law.
If Democrats were to create a law making it a misdemeanor to be a Congressman, (and I do hope you realize that this is a satirical hypothetical situation) then, in principle, those in the Republican party would have to resign for breaking the law, while the Dems, who don't care for the laws of our nation - and happen to get a pass from the media - would say "sorry" if the polls told them to, and go on to force more of their liberal bullcrap down our throats.
...Geez, the joke is never as funny once it has to be explained, c'est la vie I suppose.

...to make absolutely sure you'd see the humor. I'll guess I'll just have to try harder next time. Tennessee conservative got it exactly right, by the way.
I guess the color of things depends on the light in which you view them. I read your post just after reading an article about Republicans jumping on the bandwagon and calling for Craig to resign -- over a misdemeanor -- while the Democrats sit silent. Republicans, Democrats, misdemeanors. I wrote what was on my mind.
My apologies for souring the humor and jacking the thread.
I have to say that I don't think Craig needs to resign over this, for the same reason that I don't think Clinton needed to resign over his sex scandal, and every other sex scandal around (with exceptions for sexual scandals with minors, conflicts of interest, and so on). To me, what Sen. Craig does in his own time with men is none of my business. The fact that he did commit a minor crime is problematic, but given the nature of the crime, really, does it ACTUALLY impair his ability to be a US Senator? I suppose only if his constituents don't see it the way I do -- which is the case, but eh.
For the short-sighted, which I think is most of the country (including the various large homophobic groups), Craig is a huge political liability for the Republicans like Foley was last year, and I think Democrats are all too happy to stay out of it and let this be a Republican problem. The longer he stays, like Gonzales, the more Democrats can talk about how unethical Congress is because of Republicans, and I'm sure they're very happy about this political ammunition. I think that ultimately this Sen. Craig situation is almost purely a political problem and not much of anything else, and Craig ought to resign not because he did something worth a resignation but because to most people he's an embarassment to the Republican party, like William Jefferon's frozen assets embarass the Democrats.
And while I don't think people should be having sex in public bathrooms anyone can walk into, come on, is it really that bad?
You're obviously referring to John Edwards and his supporters.

As for your last comment, I guess it depends whether its your son or mine that walks in on it, eh?
You're pathetic.
because they would love to see him stay. I really don't think that it has much to do with their "gay constituents"; they just know that the longer this drags out, the more they can milk it.
Republicans know it, too, which is why they want him out ASAP.
What is it that compels REpublicans to form circular firing squads?
Why did he plead guilty if it was all a misunderstanding? From what I've read, he was essentially accused of tapping his foot in the stall. If he didn't know that was a signal, couldn't he have just told the police that, and then held to that throughout? I mean, until this story came out, I had no idea that was a signal for wanting to engage in lewd behavior, and I don't think that I am a complete aberration in that area. It seems like it could very easily and believable have been an honest mistake - until he pled guilty anyway - that kind of sealed his fate with his constituents.

you do make an excellent point with your satire, btw.

How do you reconcile this post with the fact that it's Republican senators calling for Craig's resignation, not Democrats?
They can't call for him to resign, less they offend their gay constituents. So Republicans are left to cast out one of their own over a misdemeanor.
Republicans need to get on the same page. "Let he who is without sin..." is either not a popular verse in Washington or there are a few there that consider themselves well qualified to be stone throwers.
I could write so much more.....but I won't. Someone else take the soapbox.
