Speaker Pelosi, would you kindly *stop* reinforcing that stereotype against Catholics?
It's personally embarrassing.

Look, I'm sure that it's a favorite quote and everything, but it's not in the Bible.
Biblical Scholars Challenge Pelosi's 'Scripture' Quote
By Pete Winn
CNSNews.com Senior Staff Writer
April 23, 2008(CNSNews.com) - House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is fond of quoting a particular passage of Scripture. The quote, however, does not appear in the Bible and is "fictional," according to biblical scholars.
In her April 22 Earth Day news release, Pelosi said, "The Bible tells us in the Old Testament, 'To minister to the needs of God's creation is an act of worship. To ignore those needs is to dishonor the God who made us.' On this Earth Day, and every day, let us pledge to our children, and our children's children, that they will have clean air to breathe, clean water to drink, and the opportunity to experience the wonders of nature."
Cybercast News Service repeatedly queried the speaker's office for two days to determine where the alleged Bible quote is found. Thus far, no one has responded.
And this isn't the first time that you've used it - nor is this the first time that you've been called on it, either. Unless you have the chapter and verse from Isaiah that this is supposedly from?
Look, it's really simple. Like it or not, we Roman Catholics have a certain reputation for not being Bible scholars, or even being fully Bible literate. It's highly unfair, of course - but you are not helping matters any by repeatedly getting this wrong. Seriously, you're only reinforcing the stereotype, and making the rest of us look bad.
So stop, already. Go talk about Tibet or something, instead.
Speaker Pelosi, would you kindly *stop* reinforcing that stereotype against Catholics? 19 Comments (0 topical, 19 editorial, 0 hidden) Post a comment »
Freedom of Religion not Freedom from Religion
"The New San Francisco Version" of the Bible.
context to make a point is to make up the scripture to make a point.
The sad thing is that she keeps stepping in the same pile of doo doo. You would think she would have learned where the pile was the first time she tried it.
wouldn't scripture if it smacked them in the face....and it just might one day ;-)

Liberals learn! That's rich! Liberals don't learn, they make up new "facts" that fit what they already know!
I'm shocked you couldn't find it. It's shortly after Hez 1:1 God helps those who help themselves.

Just....wow.
I would consider myself very Bible literate (for a layman), but tread very lightly when referring to Scripture in speech or writing. I try to do due diligence in looking up the verse(s) in question and the context of the text before using it. AT THE VERY LEAST, it's not that hard to go to www.biblegateway.com and at least make sure the referenced verses were, oh, I don't know, actually IN THE BIBLE.
Maybe I'll give her the benefit of the doubt and assume she confused the Old Testament with something she read in the "Gospel of Thomas" or "Gospel of Judas". Or, better yet, something she read from the "Jesus Seminar". Seems like the right reading material for her and her lefty elitist co-horts :)

If you loosely, and I mean VERY loosely, translate and synopsize the Genesis 1:28, I can see that coming out as ministering to the needs of God's creation as being an act of worship. Granted, the actual verses assign us dominion things, but we are also instructed to replenish the earth. Duty=Worship? I wouldn't construct it that way myself, but given the looseness of Dems with words, I can see them constructing it that way (also, I'm a good bit more fundamentalist than she is).
Of course, I can't explain the reference to Isaiah in that context.
What I will object to is that she only using loose translations of the Bible when it supports her position (caring for creation) and rejecting it as narrow-minded primitivism when it contradicts it (abortion).
with the Abortion thing.
As a Catholic I find it very offensive that she is using her post to promote environmental extremism when protecting the unborn would seem more important.

"General Patton, is it true that you once said if you found yourself between the Germans and the Russians, you would attack in both directions?"
Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid are both fortunate to live in this time and era. After men like GSP and William F Hasley were through with them, they would have felt like hot dogs on a grill or worse.
...about dissent being the highest form of patriotism? If it wasn't Jefferson, it must have been Jesus.
The Dems sure have a hard time with fact checking. I guess that's why they're Dems.
