The Latest Insult To The Netroots?

Consider this column by Robert Novak:

Anticipating that Sen. Hillary Clinton will clinch the Democratic presidential nomination, some supporters are beginning to argue against her choosing her principal rival -- Sen. Barack Obama -- for vice president.

They maintain Obama provides no general election help for Clinton. As an African-American from Illinois, he represents an ethnic group and a state already solidly in the Democratic column.

This school of thought advocates a Southerner as Clinton's running mate. The last time Democrats won a national election without a Southerner on the ticket was 1944. Prominent Democrats from the South are in short supply today. The leading prospect: former Virginia Gov. Mark Warner.

Warner, of course, is a mainstay of the Democratic Leadership Council. Just imagine the rage of the netroots if the rumors Novak reports become reality.

Haven't seen heads exploding online in a while :)

That being said, Warner would make sense, just because of the fact that he's a seasoned politician from the South who isn't likely to commit major gaffes like Obama seems to be doing on a nearly daily basis. For Hillary to win a general election, she needs to do a lot of things right... Obama can't provide her with that level of insurance.

As a secondary sort of a thing, it's possible for an HRC ticket to be ballasted by Bill Richardson, considering he's popular, from a swing state, a governor, and a member of an ethnic group who is about as politically fluid as they get. If I were a betting man, though, I'd say Warner... Richardson as running mate would probably raise more cries of cronyism than the Clintons would like to have following them.

When has this ever stopped them in the past?

I think they'd see this as validation, as they tend to see everything as validation. As I recall, Kos and Vis Numar were working for Warner before he dropped out of the Presidential race. Just shows what a bunch of power mad, non-ideological hacks they are.

Remember the Kostravaganza?

I have suspected since his drop-out that Hillary tapped him for VP at that time.

But he's a dadgum loose cannon. Ollie North with a Senate parking space.

Warner is a good bet to try and pick up Virginia.

"History will be kind to me, for I intend to write it"-Winston Churchill

Unless Jim Webb is better than I think that he'd be at explaining to a national audience why he doesn't hate Vietnam-era hippies any more. Senate, sure: Cabinet seat (if Clinton wins), very possibly. Veep, not a chance.

The Fuzzy Puppy of the VRWC. I've been usurped!

With Webb he is with them on Iraq. It remains to be seen whether Sen. Webb will be with them on the issue that REALLY matters to them: supporting or opposing any scotus nominee on the basis of their support for homosexual marriage rights and separation of church and state. if you have visited kos & co. you would know that is the issue, Iraq is a means to an end. So, while some of them would squeal about a clinton/warner ticket, the "wiser" ones would know that one THE issue they care about, a President Clinton would definitely deliver for them, regardless of who the VP is.

Never forget, David Souter was nominated by President George H.W. Bush

1) Wasn't Truman from Missouri, a Southern State?

2) Kos likes Warner

Kos would like Warner for one of 2 reasons: either a) he knows the "real" Warner supports homosexual marriage rights and a strong "wall" of separation between church and state or b) he knows that no one as far left as kos could be elected statewide in virginia and figures piggybacking on Warner (and Webb) makes him and his leftwing lemmings appear to be "mainstream".

Not a Southern state. It never officially seceded.

do some research/reading about the border wars between MO and KS. It's absolutely the most fascinating Civil War history I've read. "Gray Ghosts of the Confederacy" is a fascinating book about the "Josey Wales" period.

...when they see me they'll say, "There goes Loren Wallace,
the greatest thing to ever climb into a race car."

...you beat me to it. Blast you! Hahaha.

would not get the negative nutroot reaction Bill might receive.

Richardson would be the smart pick, but based on his not swallowing and regurgitating the "homosexuality is genetic" pablum on the homosexual cable channel he would never fly with the kos kids. He would have been better off with the kos kids saying he wants to stay in Iraq for 100 years with constant "surges". If you are a Democrat, you do NOT stray from the rez on the homosexual or church-state issue. That is #1 with them.

Never forget, David Souter was nominated by President George H.W. Bush

Richardson's problem

Richardson has a "woman problem" (wandering hands). Hillary is going to have enough trouble keeping Bill in line. Choosing Richardson would not only bring attention to Richardson's behavior, but also bring comparisons to Bill's.

Rothenberg thinks Warner would be an excellent VP choice for Clinton or Obama, electorally speaking. http://rothenbergpoliticalreport.blogspot.com/
I tend to agree with him. As much fun as it might be to see the nutroots explode, I'd much prefer to win the presidential election. I'd rather Clinton select the inexperienced Obama than Warner or Richardson.

... in style, accent, or mannerisms. The Northern Virginia suburbs aren't very southern in that way either anymore.

Warner might help with Virginia, but I really doubt he brings much to any state south of VA.

PLEASE

Tell HRC to take Obama as her VP

Please…

Because maybe the nation is “ready” for a woman President

Maybe the nation is “ready” for a Black President

But there is no way the nation will elect a ticket with both…

Novak knows this, yet will not say it… though in writing this column he is tell us all that HRC knows this fact as well.

And she wouldn't offer it. It makes no sense. He knows he can't win. He's running to lay the groundwork for 2012 because he and his think she's gonna lose, which she likely will. So he's built his whole campaign around a rejection of her type of politics, the "New New Democrat" if you will, next generation etc. He may be an empty suit, but he's slick and smart enough to know he has a future, and I don't think he has any intention of going down with that ship. If she loses, she's done, period. Her window is shut for good and BO comes out looking like a savant and becomes the de facto leader of his party.

Besides, they don't like each other - can't you tell? :)

Be nice or i'll slap you cross-eyed!

He can be the the great Senator from Illinois who makes liberal whites feel oh so good about themselves for the next 40 years. For goodness sakes, Carol Moseley Braun won a senate seat in Illinois, the Republicans have to solicit Allen Keyes to be the GOP standard bearer! Obama can run again in anytime between '12 and '24!
i don't think Richardson will accept it either. I could see him run for Domenici's seat in 6 years.
Of the names mentioned, Warner would make the most sense. I can't see him running for Governor again and a US Senate seat doesn't make sense either, even if John Warner retires.

Never forget, David Souter was nominated by President George H.W. Bush

Does anybody wonder why this guy isn't running for President? Team Clinton cut him a deal. This has been set in stone for a while. The Clinton's are very clever with this stuff. Nominating Gore was very clever not becasue he won Clinton Tenn. But becasue the left did not trust the Clinton's. They know what they are doing.

Who really cares??? ALL the libs are cut and runners anyhow, so what would make them even barely electable???
RUN FRED RUN!!

She'll have enough trouble sharing the limelight with Bill. Maybe why she wants to send him around as a roving ambassador (his eye might rove while he's away, too). Of course, no matter where he is, he'll want the media there. He craves attention.

She craves power. She's waited for years and put up with Bill's humliating her with infidelity, not to mention living in Arkansas. She's an angry, driven, bitter woman. She'll have enough trouble getting him to be the walk-three-paces-behind husband like Prince Philip.

So she doesn't want a rising star like Obama getting headlines. He'll want to do more than cast tie-breaking votes in the Senate and attend state funerals. He'll want to have accomplishments on which he can campaign for president when she's done.

And she knows the majority of US voters wouldn't go for a too-diverse ticket of Hillary-Obama. Too many latent fears/uncertainties stirred up by that.

She'll go for a docile Caucasion male. Maybe Warner, or possibly Vilsack (she had her friend send in donations to retire his campaign debt).
