No AGAG vote, but 7 GOP Senators vote for Dem fundraiser

Alberto Gonzales is Alberto Gonzales. S.J.Res 14, Chuckie Schumer's extra-Constitutional resolution to condemn him, was a partisan political maneuver by the Democrats to further damage President Bush and, more importantly, to give Schumer's Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) a fresh fundraising point. You know, the rabid Democrat faithful get excited, shout bravo, and dole out the cash when their Senators get snide and break things.
The resolution failed cloture today, 53-38-1, and died. (Seven, mostly Presidential candidates, did not vote.) Those who voted cloture were voting in actuality attempting to further damage the Republican President and to raise money for the DSCC.
The Republicans involved in Chuckie's scheme were: Norm Coleman of Minnesota, Suzie Collins of Maine, Nebraska's Chuck Hagel, John Sununu of New Hampshire, Gordon Smith of Oregon, Maine's Olympia Snow, and Pennsylvania's Snarlin' Arlen Specter.
(Alaska's Ted Stevens voted that he was there.)
Now, I'm not calling for action or mobilization or any of that against these people. There were political reasons for some of them to acquiesce to Chuckie's partisan Democratic scheme. I'd call it political cowardice, but these seven Republicans have all been mentioned before in similar contexts.
The issue here was not the war. The issue here was not Alberto Gonzales. It was a political fundraising stunt conceived by Democrats for Democrats. These seven were either playing politics or, hopefully, the were duped.

although I think Madam Pelosi thinks she is Queen and PM-so I am not really sure what form of government she thinks we should have.
(Alaska's Ted Stevens voted that he was there.)
What does that mean?
which means, for some reason, he didn't want to vote "yes" or "no," so he just said (for whatever reason) "I have no opinion".

I would like to find out who got private meetings with him in the last couple days before the vote. He only votes like that when somebody tries to explain how they control him.
Too bad we can't see the faces of everyone there. Be interesting to see who got angry when he voted...

The attorney general would be gone. First time I have seen him take a position where he would be so wrong so quick. Really making my evening.

Were undoubtedly exercising pure electoral CYA; you can judge for yourself whether that's prudence, cowardice, or rather the prudent application of cowardice.

Smith and Collins.
I don't think I'd be counting on any of them for tough votes in the next seventeen months.
some of these Senators didn't get the message last November. I guess Chafee and Voinovich are just footnotes in the Senate now.
Until they cast a vote against us that actually matters.

He's still in the Senate. You probably mean Dewine, his former colleague from his state.

Believe me, I'm not happy with Coleman's vote on this but there has been a huge backlash on the Attorney General affair back here in Minneapolis with the U.S. Attorney's office and the local Communist Manifesto of a newspaper here won't let this thing die - and Coleman is probably seeking to limit his damage on the whole AG fiasco. Sure, I'd love to see him show more backbone but at the same time, being a Republican Senator from this State is a bit like being a fresh snowball in ...well, you know where.
In any other state, and yes, I include Massachusetts in this, Coleman would be a lock for winning re-election next year but in Minnesota, a couple of wrong moves and you folks in the good old U.S. will be having to stomach Al Franken for six very long years.
Franken finally getting a laugh, running for office. If he wins I will leave my igloo and move to Iowa or something.

Ok, I'm not sure what you guys want them to do. Yes its a silly vote--meaningless. But did you notice a trend among all those voting this way. They were not in deep or light red states. These were BLUE state senators. Maine, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Oregon, Minnesota. I case a lot of you haven't noticed the GOP/George W. Bush/Conservative brand was never popular in these states, and is toxic now more than ever. Hagel is the lone exception--that vote makes no sense.
But my point is most of these people are going to be in for the fight of their lives in 2008 regardless of this vote, and they didn't need one more thing to have around their necks. If you think you are going to get anything better than Collins in Maine, or Smith in Oregon you lack a connection with reality.
If Bush hadn't bowed to Snarlin Arlen's demand that he be endorsed because of how long he had held the seat and a real Republican had been nominated instead, conservatives might have carried the state. Just because Philadelphia and Pittsburg are as Blue as DC, doesn't mean the rest of the commonwealth is. In fact, the rest of the commonwealth is probably about as Red as DC is Blue.
Some call Fred D. Thompson lazy because he didn't put up with this kind of junk in the Senate...
I would like to see a republican senator or congressperson ask for hearings about why our immigration, employment & border security laws aren't being enforced.
Is an item called courage... intestinal fortitude in the face of the popular media/political winds that are always blustering about in Washington D.C.
I might add also.... clear thinking... you know stuff like who benefits from a vote like this? Preening seems more valued by too many on the Hill than integrity and principled ideology.
I am no Gonzales fan... but don't give a weapon to your opposition! Thankfully it failed.

but that isn't at issue here. Supporting Gonzales is good for the country. He supports the GWOT and the dems keep trying to undermine it. They, like the terrorists they are helping, are only encouraged whenever they win a fight.
that because you have an R in front of your name that it doesn't necessarily make you an R and if they have to fight for their lives really shouldn't they just be honest with themselves and become D's so their constituents can all be happy. Yes this was procedural however these usual suspects are always voting with the D's anyway, they might as well go ahead and caucus with them, remove the mask.
then they can't do as much damage to the Republican party. If they switched parties to reflect their philosophies, it would be clear that the votes are purely partisan instead of the Dems being able to get accolades for bipartisianship from an adoring press whenever 3-4 Republicans vote with the Dems on a bill.
Resolution to condemn Reid.
Hey, better they waste time with meaningless legislation than pass wasteful spending bills.

... Bush defends his choice for top general. He has so much credibility with the public that he can't even get the general he wants to lead the armed forces while we are at war. Now that says something about a President.

..now feel free to support their Democrat buddies, who they agree with more than the Republicans. These are the same guys who are glad the Democrats are in charge because they didn't like what the conservatives were doing anyway.

Does anyone else ever get the sense that the Democrats long to have a parliamentary form of government?
Whether it's ridiculous "no confidence" votes, Nancy Pelosi traveling around like she's "Prime Minister" or the lefties screaming for a presidency decided by majority vote, they just seem to have so much disdain for the system we have in place.
