Ray LaHood Agrees

Image Well, we know of at least one member of the Republican Steering Committee opposed to Ken Calvert's appointment. Ray LaHood deserves massive applause. And contrast this with Joe Barton's refusal to even say how he voted.

According to a Republican inside the room, Rep. Ray LaHood (R-Ill.) encouraged members to “not go back,” reminding them of the heavy toll ethical scandals took during the 2006 election cycle.

“We lost the last election because of corruption,” LaHood reportedly said.

LaHood confirmed that he spoke out against Calvert during the Steering Committee meeting yesterday, saying his 25 years in the House — 12 as a staff member and 13 as a lawmaker — were factors in his objection.

“I care a lot about the House of Representatives, I care a lot about our members and once someone is ethically challenged and gets in trouble it effects all of us,” he said. “I appreciate the high ethical standards that [Boehner] has set ... but I believe the bar was lowered today when our conference chose to vote Ken Calvert onto the Appropriations Committee.

We'll be bringing additional fire power to this war on Monday.

And an excellent job on this. Calvert should have recused himself on the interchange issue. There goes even the appearance of impropriety.

It appears to be an embroidered star on a field of blue.

Looking again I see it could be. But then it should be taking back our country. No problem with that it should be a bipartisan issue.

There is the bigger issue of why only one party actually worries about corruption from their own. But thats another story.

It is a close up shot of the American flag.

Ending corruption in all levels of government should be a bipartisan issue. Unfortunately, the GOP stands alone in its propensity to eat-their-own.

Apparently, that same moral clarity, or lack thereof, applies to "God and Country" as well, because the democrats routinely display their propensity to allow partisanship and political gain to trump all else.

Note: Enhanced the picture with my trusty photo-editing software - almost positive it's an embroidered star.

This is getting through. "The Hill" took notice yesterday.

"I wish to have no connection with any ship that does not sail fast; for I intend to go in harm's way."
John Paul Jones (letter to M. Le Ray de Chaumont,16 Nov.1778)

At what point does the Calvert issue deserve to be put to rest? We have a battle of wills being waged in Congress over the true support of the Troops and the Mission in Iraq that needs pressure and tenacity placed on the Surrender crowd. We have Democratically controlled committees trying to oust every official in the White House all the way up to the POTUS - yet this "campaign" against a Republican holds the spotlight here for the 4th day in a row.

Where was the outcry for Calvert's removal from Congress a month ago? 3 months ago? Are the American people going to think it's okay for corruption in Congress as long as they don't sit on or head up a committee?

I'd say that, if through these efforts, Calvert's committee position is taken from him and handed to someone else and even if he ends up resigning, and at the same time, a group of "Moderate" Republicans bails out on the War Effort and either a veto is overturned or an "unclean" bill is signed, then we have won a battle and lost a huge War.

And finally, as for Calvert's prostitution arrest - first off, let ye without sin cast the first stone and secondly, if we want to clean out the Congress based on past transgressions, there isn't a big enough bus available to haul them all off The Hill.

Time to move on to the issues that are putting our Country at high risk at this very moment. IMHO.

Let the GOP put forth a slate of clean candidates. Let the GOP enact an internal ethics code thats strict, fair and observed in its enforcement . We cant hide our mistakes until the MSM decides to dig them up in an election year October.

Right now congress has an approval rating of about 30%. Why ? Because everyone in the country KNOWS !!! that they are crooks. The public doesn't think they might be crooks, they know it the same way they know gravity and that the sun rises in the east. The average person figures the typical congressman's job is

1. Getting reelected
2. Lining their pockets
3. Pandering to friends family and donors
4. Pandering to vocal elements that might get them unelected

This has to change.

Nope. Sorry, We lost the war when Bush put NewTone™ over the conduct of the war in Iraq.

When the Congressional leadership couldn't find it in their souls to work with the WH (who didn't much seem to care either) to put together an agenda for their majority we lost the war.

When POTUS didn't insist AGAG impanel a grand jury to investigate CIA and NSA leaks we lost the war.

When Joe Wilson was allowed to lie about his trip and report without so much as a "Huh?" from the White House, we lost the war.

When the Administration stands up and says that Murtha and Reid are patriots who have a different vision for the country, I say at least they are willing to stand up for something, and we've lost the war.

The only thing that's going on now is a holding action to cover the retreat.

CongressCritter™: Never have so few felt like they were owed so much by so many for so little.

we don't have time for ANY stories corrupt politicians and the actions we can take against them, even if they are Democrats, right?

No more follow ups on Pelosi/Starkist, Reid/land-deals, Jefferson/IN HIS FREEZER!!!, Kathleen Sebelius/lies about the Kansas NG, MI house Dems/taking bribes, or any of the other Dem culture of corruption stories.

Evil prevails only when good men do nothing.

Mason, I'm not saying that at all in fact I would PREFER stories exposing the corruption of the Dems! My point was, we have a post here and there, about the Reid Land Deal, we have an occasional post/thread regarding Feinstein's dirty dealing and conflict of interest with her husband's company but yet, there has been four straight days of over 12 postings on this one effort to take down a Republican. What Erick does is totally his deal, I'm just saying...if you are going to expend that energy on this kind of grass roots gutting of Congress, organize the efforts more against the other side who are putting the lives of our boys in peril each day in Iraq. It's fine to take down a Republican if he is indeed corrupt but to me, it's more important to take down a Dem leader in Congress who may cost this Country the freedom and Liberty it stands for rather than a few seats in the elections in '08.

When will the Rebulicans learn? Don't they know that ethical standards is what cost them the majority?

I know that I speak for a lot of Americans when I say that I want someone with high ethical standards to represent me.

It behooves us to search out someone with good ethics when we go to the voting booth.

Where are the Conservatives when we need them?

With malice towards none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as God gives us to see right.

We have people willing to speak out against our own. But there appears to be absolute silence in the MSM and from all points left when it comes to Jefferson, Mollohan, Feinstein, etc., and even some Dem presidential candidates.

It's war -- so when can we start shooting back at the enemy Democrats?

The Battle Plan will be released on Monday. We will be bringing additional fire power to this war. We will not tire; we will not falter; and we will not fail.

I'd be a lot more impressed if he'd voted against the hate crime legislation a week or two ago.

"Be intolerant. Because some things are just stupid"

It ticks me off that Reps don't realize they always will have to run a much cleaner shop. The MSM will always emphasize Rep corruption and mute Dem corruption.

Republican party will always be treated as the older brother or sister that should know better and the Dems are the whiny young sibling that gets away with a lot.

What it tells me is Republican leadership is poor by not creating cohesiveness and setting standards for the rest of the party.

it's not just cause it's the media. The people who vote Democrat just don't have that high of moral standards, but they are willing to exploit the standards of Republican voters. Ultimately, it means we need to put forth morally upright candidates, not only because it's the right thing to do but because our voters care about such things. Democrat voters are perfectly fine voting for corruption. Heck, what do you expect of people who been voting for legalized murder for 30 years?

This whole issue is just stunningly stupid. NO MORE CORRUPTION. In response to the arguments that it is too dangerous a time to lose a vote on the Iraq war bill, I would suggest that this logic would lead you to never performing any ethical hygeine since there is always some danger to the Republic from without.

Unless we kick this guy out, we're sending a clear signal that all we care about are your votes and you can screw over the law and morality as much as you want. No way. Throw the bum out. I'll be linking to this on my blog, too.
