Trent Lott Retires

This takes me by surprise too, though when one considers all of the money that can be made in lobbying, the decision by Lott to leave is less surprising. It is well known that he was a reluctant candidate in his last re-election effort and though he appears to have enjoyed his return to the leadership, lobbying seems to hold more allure.
I hope that Jon Kyl takes Lott's place. He is highly intelligent and deeply substantive and he is an excellent parliamentarian and inside player--precisely the kind of person who ought to be a Whip and perhaps, a future Leader for Senate Republicans. The other candidates to replace Lott don't appear to measure up.

The Red Sox Republican: Burkeanism, Baseball, and Sundries.
I find the juxtaposition of the pork hysteria (a trivial 1% of the budget) with anger AMNESTY!!!! to be amusing, because it shows a lack of any perspective.
Kyl, the leader in the attempt to ram amnesty down our throats this year? That Senator Kyl? Ted Kennedy's partner on illegal immigration? Senator Jon Kyl?
Have you seen what Kyl and his ilk have done to Republican finances by selling out the party to the open borders crowd?
Surely you jest. If Kyl attracts a decent opponent in the primaries next go around I'll probably contribute to getting him tossed out of the Senate. And I see from the preceding response I won't be the only one feeling this way.

I cannot believe people think Sen. Kyl should be the replacement Minority Whip. Have we just totally forgotten the Amnesty Bill?...Personally Kyl deserves nothing more than to lose his seat next time he comes up for re-election. Lott deserved to have the same thing but he's jumping ship to go do some lobbying to get more pork for Mississippi...actually more stuff he can slap the name Sen. Trent Lott too at the taxpayer's expense.
We need someone strong to be the new whip. Instead of cheering for Kyl how about Sen. DeMint, someone who actually stands up for conservative principles. We need a real conservative and not a pawn to the GOP establishment..if we stick with them we deserve nothing more than a huge loss in 2008.
