Veto The Bill

ImageHouse Republicans have sent a letter to President Bush urging him to veto the supplemental appropriations bill passed by Congress, which would slowly bleed our troops to death in Iraq.

The letter was very short, simple, and filled with signatures assuring the GOP has enough votes to sustain a Presidential veto. The letter reads:

Dear Mr. President,

We are greatly concerned about the extraneous and excessive non-security related funds contained within the Global War on Terror supplemental spending bill currently under consideration in the Congress. If you choose to veto this measure over this spending, we will vote to sustain your veto.

You can see the whole thing here (PDF).

now there's a number you could mock up a movie trailer poster for. I'd be happier if they mentioned the unconstitutional usurpation of the powers of the Commander in Chief, but this will do. time to break out the Veto Pen, Mr. President!

I'm not quite sure what you mean. do you mean they have votes to spare (i.e. more than enough to sustain a veto)? sorry for the fuzzy reception.

Two-thirds of 435 is 290, one-third is 145, so 146 House members are sufficient to sustain a veto. Good to have a few extras in cases like this, in case a few go weak in the knees.

that's what I figured he meant (and will now assume provided Moe does not come back and say otherwise), but the wording/brevity of the post puzzled me a bit.

I assmue that there are probably a few more than the 154 who signed who will sustain the veto as well, so probably a bit more slack than is apparent even here.

And, reading over it, yeah, it did need translating. My bad. :)

If only they had all been acting like this the past couple years America might have been spared Madam Speaker.

"The Constitution was made to guard the people against the dangers of good intentions."

Does everyone here reaize that this would be only the second time in over 6 years that President Bush has had any input in the legislative process? After all, every bill passed before this save the stem cell bill would have become law with or without the President's signature. Cite this the next time one of the wack jobs tells you how Bush is a dictator and a Nazi/Fascist/whateverthehellelse they want to call him.

Surprising, ain't it?

Make no mistake, the political savagery taking place right now in Washington, especially by Hillary Clinton, is borderline treasonous.

How can anyone feel safe when we see people like Hillary treating our national security as a pawn for her socialist pet projects? I found some interesting things about her voting record, and it is far different than what she is saying now. If you are interested, you can read more on http://hillaryclintonrevealed.net/.

God Bless America!

I'll post about something different :)

Can we PLEASE stop throwing around the word 'treason'

It cheapens the debate and makes you sound like an eighth grader doing an after school debate.

Along those lines - phrases like 'slow bleed' sound equally as lame.

Attack the positions with maturity. That is the best way to highlight the immaturity of the opposing position.

If it sounds immature, well, so is the strategy that it describes.

Sure - it may sound accurate. The problem with it is that it is used as a slogan. A quick phrase that is pushed around as if it signifies and simplifies all that the defunding stands for.

For example, when people on the left use phrases like 'war for oil' or 'Bush crime family' - it should rightfully stand out how foolish and immature those people are. Not necessarly because they believe that the war is being fought for oil (which is folly obviously), but because they sound like parrots avoiding the finer details of the issue. 'I don't know much about this - but I know [insert tv/radio/political personality] doesn't like it - and he calls it [slogan] - so to shall I'

Attack with ideas. Attack with thought. Don't attack with malice and blind disregard. Dont use slogans.

How about the fact - note: fact - that the conduct of the US government in relation to the hostage situation in Tehran in 1979, the murdered Marines in Beirut, the Blackhawk Down episode, the first bombing of the WTC, the Cole, the African Embassies was to understand that their conclusion drawn after the Democrats forced defunding of the South Vietnamese was correct. Namely, spill a little blood and the Democratic Party and major media outlets will wear down the American resolve.

Just wait until the Democrats defund Iraq.

I will avoid using "treason" (except for JF Kerry, and possibly T Kennedy for actions in the '70's and '80's). I will say that the judgment of Democrats leaves everything to be desired. They have a greater affection for power in DC and for the approval of the membership of the UN than they do for traditional American values, liberty and our national security.
