Tony Snow to step down

Dana Perino will be the new White House press secretary

White House Press Secretary Tony Snow is stepping down on September 14, to be replaced by deputy press sec Dana Perino. There is only one Tony Snow, and his unique talents cannot be replaced, but Ms. Perino is no slouch.

Tony, of course, is battling the dread disease, cancer, but it has been said that he's leaving to pursue interests in the private sector.

Godspeed, Tony. Chuck Schumer has no say in this personnel decision, though I'm sure he wants one.

I sure wish we had Tony in that position four years ago. He has been an outstanding voice for the administration in that position and he will be sorely missed.

Is excellent, too. While I commend Scott McClellan for his service to the president, either Snow or Perino is far, far better suited for the most important part of the job -- facing a hostile media every day.

He seems to be a great guy. Amazing how much older he looks now as compared to when he started the job. Godspeed, Tony.

In my book, Tony Snow is the best... integrity, a grounded intellect, and solid character being the foundation of his great talent as a communicator, newsman, and political commentator. When he moved into the position of White House Press Secretary, the President could not have a better person serving him.

May God bless Tony Snow and his family as he moves on to the next chapter of his life.

The World's Ruined

The Press Spokesman is a thankless job, not to mention the challenge of having to deal with the likes of Helen Thomas, David Gregory, and their colleagues. He handled it as well, if not better, than most under extremely difficult circumstances for the administration, as well as for himself and family personally.

...to hang around as long as he has.

"Chemotherapy" is, after all, a polite way of saying "pumping one's body full of poison and hoping for the best".

Snow's a pretty tough dude.

Godspeed to him.

Tony Snow will be greatly missed, but - good grief do I ever love that firecracker Dana Perino!

One of the best Press Secretaries ever. He came at a time when the President needed strong spokesman who could handle the voracious, self-absorbed, self-important White House Press corps.

because he did not look well yesterday and I hope he kicks this cancer scourge. He was definately a great spokesman for this President other than the spin on the immigration bill. 99 percent not a bad ratio:-)

In a recent interview with David Gregory, it wasn't a question of health, but one of money that would cause him to leave. Apparently he was making a lot more money in the private sector, and he needs that now to pay for treatment.

The interview is great, by the way. It's long, but watching it is a fitting tribute if you're a Snow fan.

I think you sort of have that right, it's money but not for his treatment. I'm not sure if Snow went with a COBRA deal from FOX or just went over to the federal employee medical care system, but I don't think the health issue is forcing his hand.

I think it's the cost of living and a young family trying to get by in the Washington DC area on his government salary. Throw in his health issues and I'd guess he's very concerned about making sure his family is taken care of if the worst happens.

Snow though has been a heck of Press Secretary, and I hope he comes back to FOX with his early morning talk show slot. I very much liked listening to him instead of Brian and the Judge.

None of the Above !

I don't care about the politics when I say I hope he recovers and becomes a cancer surviror. But that does not excuse what he is. A professional lair who's job is to make the president look good.

Tony Snow has been unable to sell Bush and his policies to the American public. For the past year, Bush’s poll numbers have continued to fall, dropping to all-time lows and rivaling Richard Nixon’s ratings right before he resigned from office.

Additionally, nothing “new” has come from the White House in the past year, and Snow’s “good outside-the-box thinking” has been largely rejected by the public. Even right-wing pundits Charles Krauthammer and Fred Barnes recently admitted that the White House has “no agenda.” As the Washington Post noted in July:

"But the president’s unpopularity has left the White House to play mostly defense for the remainder of his term. With his immigration overhaul proposal dead, Bush’s principal legislative hopes are to save his No Child Left Behind education program and to fend off attempts to force him to change course in Iraq. The emerging strategy is to play off a Congress that is also deeply unpopular and to look strong by vetoing spending bills."

Looks like even Tony Snow couldn’t spin around the White House.

BTW- could you elaborate on the Dem agenda? This week's, that is, as it appears to be constantly...evolving.

but I see that the party's over!

Hubba Hubba...I might watch more press conferences now.

Stop talking about my girlfriend like that. Thems is fightin words.

He doesn't look too good. I don't think anyone would with his condition, but I hope he is strong enough to pull through. He seems like the kind of guy with a lot of personal strength and that he gets strength from his family.
