Help Send RedState To Iraq

By The Directors Posted in | Comments (131) / Email this page » / Leave a comment »

What if somewhere in the world, there was something going on - something that was one of the most important stories of our lifetime?

What if you had the choice to send someone to tell you that story firsthand? Would you send someone like, say, Dan Rather?

Or would you send someone you trusted?

Today, you have the opportunity to help send two of our own, from right here at Redstate, to tell you the real story about what's happening on the ground in Iraq.

In a nutshell, RedState has been invited by the Pentagon to go to Iraq. We want to send Jeff and AcademicElephant, who henceforth insists on being known by her real name, Victoria Coates. They'll leave during the last part of April. But, we need your help to make it possible.

Read on...

To send RedState to Iraq, we need to raise $7500.00. This presents a challenge to us now, one that it did not present last year. As you probably know, RedState is now owned by Eagle Publishing, Inc. A lot of you are probably asking why they don't just fork over the money. Well, frankly, there just isn't money budgeted for something like this right now, but the experience presents such an invaluable opportunity, we really want to do it. We need your help. Eagle is going to commit the first $2500.00 to the trip, which, given all the data the Pentagon has given us, will cost $10,000.00 total.

We want to make it worth your time and money, so here's the deal. If you will contribute $50.00, we'll make sure you get Victoria and Jeff's posts before everyone else -- from their videos to their writings. If you contribute $100.00 or more, we'll put you on an email list with Victoria and Jeff to correspond with them, ask questions, etc. while they are in Iraq.

This is an exciting opportunity for all of us. The military will take Victoria and Jeff around Iraq and they'll get the word out to all of us on what's really going on over there -- no filter through the mainstream media. Victoria and Jeff will give you the unvarnished reality of what's going on in Iraq. Jeff might even share some war stories from when he was over there fighting. Victoria is looking forward to some original commentaries on the treasures at the Baghdad Museum -- you know, the ones supposedly looted that weren't.

Please help support this worthy cause and please help send RedState to Iraq. We want this to be a community effort that will benefit us all.

UPDATE: Attention Lefty Morons: Jeff actually did enlist and fight in Iraq.

What a day for the b-sphere. I think Jeff and Academic Elephant are the best choices. Course I would have thrown Streiff in there too myself.... :)

And all I ask is that I get to use this space for a MITT ROMNEY PLUG!!!

Love you guys.

If Jeff and Academic Elephant swing up by C.O.B. Speicher (Tikrit), have them flip a quick email to neodanite@yahoo.com.

We'll hook up for coffee at Green Beans.

And methinks Steven Foley and mbecker can hold their own, as well.

for anything that involves much danger or ANY work, at least of the physical sort! But I appreciate the thought.

Seriously, though, I have thought of seeing if I can find a gig there; I'm a pretty good public sector manager and God knows they need some of that. And as you can tell by how much time I spend here, retirement is boring the life out of me; puttering around my boat and keeping up with the "honey-do" list ain't getting it! Plus, I have a kid in Afghanistan, and sitting comfortably at home doesn't sit well.

I can hold my own from a long way off in a high position, though. And I can bring friends...

How's your son doing???? We're praying for him (and you!).

Doing fine except he and most of his squad are all badly sunburned. Went on a mission "up some mountain" and all got fried, so a bunch of SPF 45 in the next care package.

They've been really beefing up their FOB, spring's coming, and I can always count on a good b**ch about the joys of filling and humping sandbags. A new SF unit just rotated in and I love how the "old veteran," he's been there three months, is so down on the FNGs. Some things never change.

Thanks for the kind thoughts.

Wouldn't Redstate, which is a conservative blog, as the name implies, be biased in the coverage of the Iraq war?

but for the life of me I just can't see it.

Are you saying Jeff and Victoria shouldn't be allowed to report because they are conservative? How do you square that with libs like David Ignatius, etc. reporting from Iraq? Is that okay?

"A man can never have too much red wine, too many books, or too much ammunition." -- Rudyard Kipling

And not answering my question. Of course anyone could go to Iraq and report. That's the beauty of freedom. But my question was, "wouldn't Redstate be biased"? Even assuming that all the reporters from all the media outlets in Iraq are liberal, BBC, ABC, CNN, AP, etc., wouldn't the goal for Redstate be to be unbiased in its reporting? Or is the goal to purposely attempt to be biased towards pro-war views in order to provide some balance?

Either that, or you've never read RedState before. Nobody's ever claimed that Jeff and AE don't bring their own life experiences and perspectives to the table (here's where we're honest and the MSM is not), but if you think that renders them incapable of being honest about what they see, you can just go ahead and scoot along to a different thread now.

Read the masthead. Understand the mission. Contemplate whether you have a point at all before posting.

Thanks in advance.

The title of your first response to me was,

I guess you have a point

and now you say,

Contemplate whether you have a point at all before posting.

I can't have and not have a point at the same time, so please make up your mind.

And I asked a legitimate question, since Redstate is a conservative blog, and I am asking for clarification as to what the approach would be in reporting news from Iraq. This is why I did not assert that these Redstaters who plan to go to Iraq will do a bad job. I asked them, and I have not gotten an answer yet.

you've been so busy beclowning yourself that you haven't bothered to read.

"A man can never have too much red wine, too many books, or too much ammunition." -- Rudyard Kipling

1. I'm not streiff.
2. You're apparently incapable of understanding sarcasm.
3. If your whole point is to ask Jeff and AE whether they'll be able to do a good job, you really need to move on, as the existence of this post would seem to answer this question adequately.

Number 3 was not a suggestion.

You told me bias is not a big deal. That's a perfect answer to my question. Thanks. It could have been posted in one comment and saved us some time.

But if it would make you feel better at least you still have CBS, ABC, NBC, the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Associated Press, Reuters and CNN to report it from the liberal perspective.

How they would ever be able to compete against the might and power of Redstate's own Jeff Emanuel and Victoria Coates in informing the American, I just don't know.

George W. Bush: He's A Folder ... Not A Fighter.George W. Bush: He's A Folder ... Not A Fighter.

no I'm not saying two wrongs make a right, I'm saying opinion writers of all stripes visit Iraq and opinion writers are called that because they have opinions.

no I didn't answer your question because it is ridiculous in the extreme. You are correct, they would have a bias. Big freakin deal. Humans have bias. The fact that you registered just to post this pissant complaint shows you have one also.

You read the site. We are here because we have beliefs. I'm pretty confident, though, that Jeff and Victoria will call them as they see them. They have in the past.

"A man can never have too much red wine, too many books, or too much ammunition." -- Rudyard Kipling

A big deal is made here about the mainstream media perceived liberal bias. I think you are using double standard.

the media says it is objective, that is what allegedly distinguishes the news section of the paper from the op-ed section.

We are not journalists, we are opinion writers.

Got the concept?

No double standard, just the same standard. Your standard seems to be that conservative opinion is illegal.

"A man can never have too much red wine, too many books, or too much ammunition." -- Rudyard Kipling

The original thread spoke about telling a story about something that's going on in x part of the world. That sounds to me as news reporting.

In fact, it's the exact same standard no matter how you look at it.

If the Associated Press can be biased to the Left, it's a double standard to say that Redstate cannot be biased to Right, isn't it?

Now I know, you'll earnestly argue that two wrongs don't make a right and that even if the Associated Press is biased to Left, we should be above board and take the high road and all that BS ...

But at least we'll be open about it.

That's already ten times more honest than the Associated Press ... so we still have the high road.

Really ... who do you think you're fooling here?

George W. Bush: He's A Folder ... Not A Fighter.

Admitting that BBC, ABC, CNN, AP are biased...

(also add NBC, CBS, MSNBC, NYT, WAPO, the Guardian, LA Times, Boston Globe, yada, yada, yada. Then throw in the imams of Kos, MyDD, DU, HuffPo who will chastise the liberal MSM if they seem to be growing cool in the faith)

then complaining about poor ol' RedState!

Geez, don't you guys have ENOUGH?

Incidentally the assumption (which is based on polls of reporters themselves) is that a super-majority of reporters in the MSM are biased towards the left.

P.S. Please check out my other comment (posted somewhere below this comment) about bias.

...a long habit of not thinking a thing wrong, gives it a superficial appearance of being right...

---Thomas Paine---

but how stupid?

What makes you think conservatives are biased in war? You think we would use our conservative principles to defend...what? The anti-abortionists in Iraq? Fair tax rates?

This actually shows how badly our country has been damaged by the idiot liberals. There is no longer a country that can be united in a desire to win and a sensibility about what it takes to get there. Instead, we have the anti-war left, who desire nothing so much as to lose this one and prevent all future wars, and the rest of us normal people who fight when we think we have to and use cold evaluations to say how it's going and what it would take to win it.

And enough already with the kinder and gentler stuff. It's time for a surge. Unleash the Moe's of war!!

I meant what I said and I said what I meant. An elephant's faithful 100 percent.

A certain degree of bias is intrinsic to the human condition. An ethical reporter will acknowledge this fact, admit their bias to their respective audience, and utilize techniques such as, but not limited to "balance" in order to increase the objectivity of their work. In no shape or form does the mere existence of a person's bias disqualify them as sound a reporter.

...a long habit of not thinking a thing wrong, gives it a superficial appearance of being right...

shows how profoundly ignorant the Left is about the US military and just how close JFK2's "if you're stupid, you go to Iraq" line was to what they truly believe. The military doesn't want slack-jawed, dope smoking slacker draftees and it doesn't want over-age, out of shape, unskilled volunteers. I wouldn't want to endure my infantryman son's abuse if I just went on a run with him; I don't even want to think about what he'd think of having to rely on me to watch his back.

And hey, Jdub, I'll take it as a compliment that you think I'd be a good choice to travel with the group and carry their luggage. Throughout recorded history the supply teams, the logistics people, and the tenders and heavy lifters have been the keys to success of any important operation. All our friends in the Military Airlift Command know just how important their job is, and when you see a C-17 or a C5 Galaxy arcing across the sky, you know that "carrying the luggage" is a big part of the job. And an aircraft carrier couldn't remain on station very long unless there were a lot of people on board who knew how to pack for the trip, so I'd be honored.

I will be happy to put in $50 if you can do something about the trolls- I come here to be with fellow conservatives and lately I have to read 'bush lied, war bad, everything Bush and conservatives fault, if only Hillary was in charge the world would be saved' - crap. Maybe fix it so that there is a day waiting time between signing up and posting or tighten up the rules of post. I stopped visiting poliPundit recently because there was a commentator always complaining about the War. No solutions except Bush wrong and pull out. I just want a site that I can visit, relax, see some others post conservative views, without having to defend my thoughts every other post.

Just as fast as we can.

I agree with your request, there are just times when you do want to visit with like minded people and here at RedState 98% you will, however 2% you won't. I think they can control the animals very well at this site and whoa watch the language thing because I got into it back in Nov and was threatened with being kicked off. Polipundit by the way is now a horrible site for conservatives to visit. I expressed recently in a respnse over there that they have reaped what they sowed by allowing their authors to consistantly beat up on Bush, that is like meat for the hungary dogs and of course it has been proven true, the leftist have come to that site and they have stayed.

Peace through superior fire power:)

0. someone cases the the site.
1. They send in rowdies that are disruptive. Their purpose seems to wear down mods, regulars and most importantly set precedents.
2. Once the precedents are set and the Mods don't want the hassle they can either flood a site or just have high profile postings. Either way its no longer what it once was.

This doesn't require an explicit organization. The process can self organize and just happen. The various parts just need to respond to the appropriate stimuli and it becomes like a boulder rolling downhill.
