McCain Wants Bush to Hold Weekly TV Briefings

Advice on Iraq

President Bush will address the nation Thursday night about Iraq. Sen. John McCain wants him to make it a habit.

On a blogger conference call with the Republican presidential candidate this afternoon, I asked McCain what he would say tomorrow night if he were in Bush's shoes. Before answering my question, McCain told me he would like to see Bush on television once a week -- even if C-SPAN was the only station to cover it -- talking about the situation on the ground in Iraq. McCain would make it a detailed briefing (presumably with maps and charts) that would give Americans anunderstanding of what was happening.

McCain also told me Bush should acknowledge that mistakes have been made in order for the American people to regain trust in him. Before people accept the fact that U.S. forces are making progress, McCain said they must first hear from Bush that errors were made in the past.

As for the points he'd emphasize tomorrow, McCain said greater emphasis should be placed on the role of Iran's and Syria's meddling in Iraq. Both countries have a desire to keep Iraq unstable in order to advance their own interests in the region.

Soren Dayton has an excellent recap of the call and his thoughts about it. Others with posts include Matt Lewis, Jennifer Rubin and Jim Geraghty.

He should have been holding them every week for the last 6 years. Demand Primetime from all the major networks.

...But no. Bush is smart in many ways, but totally fails in PR...

does Bush have to "acknowledge that mistakes have been made?"

This just sickens me.

Personally I'd like McCain to admit, every time he speaks, that he was wrong on shamnesty, on the gang of 14, on 100 other issues where he betrayed the President in time of war and made his job harder.

He disgusts me.

McCain's standing firm with the president on the single most important issue facing our nation right now, and you still can't help taking a shot at him.

He is one of a handful of American political leaders standing against surrender, and you still train your guns at him and fire indiscriminately.

(After all, the president too stood for "shamnesty" - which means that by your logic every Republican who stood against Bush on immigration ought to be condemned for opposing the president at a time of war.)

You're either blinded by uninformed anger or a political operative trying to tar and feather one of the few in Congress who stand strong for victory.

Either way, please consider that a scorched earth policy against any Republican is scorched earth against all of us.

Scorched earth got us a Democratic Congress and Senate - The most ethical Congress, ever. We showed them Republicans, didn't we.

And no, I do not want to read any BS about they brought it on themselves.

for the last time, REPUBLICANS showed up at the polls in about the same proportions as other off year elections, so get your damn facts straight! We lost all the independents, and we lost them because we did not govern well.

Furthermore you (I am withholding and explitive here), are very silly to think that one party can hold on to power in this country forever. Considering that the Democrats are going to sooner or later get there chance to govern. I think it was a good thing that it happened at this time.

It gives us a chance to clean up our own house, and show the American people that the Dem's are not serious about any of their promises.

So get off your high horse and gain a fundamental understanding of American politics before you post.
