I want you to get this **** where he breathes! ...I want him DEAD! I want his family DEAD! I want his house burned to the GROUND! I wanna go there in the middle of the night and I wanna PISS ON HIS ASHES!

- Al Capone, "The Untouchables"

Well, as others have discussed here today, the rumors have been swirling that Osama bin Laden may have shuffled off this mortal coil recently at the tender age of 49 (the age George W. Bush was in his first year as Texas governor), dead of typhoid fever, an illness rarely seen these days in the civilized West but harder to evade or treat when one is cowering in a cave surrounded by primitives and religious fanatics.

Is this true? We have heard such rumors before, and have as yet no confirmation, though Ace (link above) considers several reasons why a flurry of recent events would make more sense if bin Laden had died. If it is true, I would have preferred a more violent or more protracted and agonizing death - sorry folks, I take this one very personally - but this will do. Bin Laden has, after September 11, seen his movements restricted, his men decimated, his income throttled, his open allies smashed or cowed, his bases destroyed - and he has never again emerged with a victory to crow about. His one functional ally against the U.S., Zarqawi's organization in Iraq, has been beheaded and essentially run to ground. It is altogether fitting if he has died in obscurity, uncelebrated and unmartyred, felled by an adversary that is microscopic and no threat to his enemies, yet utterly uninterested in fame or ideology, regarding the would-be caliph merely as food.

If it's not true, well, a bin Laden in hiding in a primitive region of the Pakistani-Afghan border isn't all that immediately dangerous, and pursuing him shouldn't be regarded as a substitute for crushing his organization and tearing up his ideology by the roots, but we should be after him implacably nonetheless for the same reason why the Israelis executed Eichmann and pursued Mengele decades after the fall of the Third Reich. If poor hygeine did not get bin Laden, American justice will, sooner or later. We will not forget. And we will laugh last.

about bombing a cemetary. It's not like we're going to hurt the dead. Bombing a school full of kids, a hospital with sick people in it, a church service etc-- yes, those actions would be wrong, but a cemetary?

...that it stems from the old notion of cemeteries being holy ground. Most cultures' burial places are of max emotional importance, and striking at them deliberately is a old terror tactic.

The Fuzzy Puppy of the VRWC.

But in the particular case, it would have been justified. After all, the jihadists tend to hide behind anything they think will be respected by our ROE.

But wasn't Bin Laden supposedly on dialysis as well? Is it possible that the electricity running into his cave got cut off because he forgot the pay his utilities this month?

On topic, if he is in fact dead, I guess dead by disease is as good as dead courtesy of the US Armed Forces. Ehhhh, not really.

because he made energy prices so high! ;)

Richard Miniter runs this story to ground in his book.

Always good to remember that Osama (UBL) has already confessed to being part of the 9/11 plot. All that's left for him is the gallows, if he hasn't crossed that bridge already.

[This is the transcript (translated into English) of the Usama bin Laden videotape released by the Pentagon on Thursday, December 13, 2001. [...] In mid-November, Usama Bin Laden spoke to a room of supporters, possibly in Qandahar, Afghanistan. These comments were video taped with the knowledge of Bin Laden and all present.]

excerpt:

UBL: Those youth who conducted the operations did not accept any [Islamic law] in the popular terms, but they accepted the [Islamic law] that the prophet Muhammad brought. Those young men (... inaudible...) said in deeds, in New York and Washington, speeches that overshadowed all other speeches made everywhere else in the world. The speeches are understood by both Arabs and non-Arabs even by Chinese. It is above all the media said. Some of them said that in Holland, at one of the centers, the number of people who accepted Islam during the days that followed the operations were more than the people who accepted Islam in the last eleven years. I heard someone on Islamic radio who owns a school in America say: "We don't have time to keep up with the demands of those who are asking about Islamic books to learn about Islam." This event made people think (about true Islam) which benefited Islam greatly.

Shaykh: Hundreds of people used to doubt you and few only would follow you until this huge event happened. Now hundreds of people are coming out to join you. I remember a vision by Shaykh Salih Al-(( Shuaybi)). He said: "There will be a great hit and people will go out by hundreds to Afghanistan." I asked him (Salih): "To Afghanistan?" He replied, "Yes." According to him, the only ones who stay behind will be the mentally impotent and the liars (hypocrites). I remembered his saying that hundreds of people will go out to Afghanistan. He had this vision a year ago. This event discriminated between the different types of followers.

UBL: (... Inaudible...) we calculated in advance the number of casualties from the enemy, who would be killed based on the position of the tower. We calculated that the floors that would be hit would be three or four floors. I was the most optimistic of them all. (... Inaudible...) due to my experience in this field, I was thinking that the fire from the gas in the plane would melt the iron structure of the building and collapse the area where the plane hit and all the floors above it only. This is all that we had hoped for.

Shaykh: Allah be praised.

UBL: We were at (... inaudible...) when the event took place. We had notification since the previous Thursday that the event would take place that day. We had finished our work that day and had the radio on. It was 5: 30 p. m. our time. I was sitting with Dr. Ahmad Abu-al-(( Khair)). Immediately, we heard the news that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. We turned the radio station to the news from Washington. The news continued and no mention of the attack until the end. At the end of the newscast, they reported that a plane just hit the World Trade Center.

Shaykh: Allah be praised.

UBL: After a little while, they announced that another plane had hit the World Trade Center. The brothers who heard the news were overjoyed by it.

Shaykh: I listened to the news and I was sitting. We didn't... we were not thinking about anything, and all of a sudden, Allah willing, we were talking about how come we didn't have anything, and all of a sudden the news came and everyone was overjoyed and everyone until the next day, in the morning, was talking about what was happening and we stayed until four o'clock, listening to the news every time a little bit different, everyone was very joyous and saying "Allah is great," "Allah is great," "We are thankful to Allah," "Praise Allah." And I was happy for the happiness of my brothers. That day the congratulations were coming on the phone non-stop. The mother was receiving phone calls continuously. Thank Allah. Allah is great, praise be to Allah.

(Quoting the verse from the Quran)

Shaykh: "Fight them, Allah will torture them, with your hands, he will torture them. He will deceive them and he will give you victory. Allah will forgive the believers, he is knowledgeable about everything."

I always thought it would be a brilliant stroke by US Military if they were to use the habitat as the means to kill Usama by poisoning water, or dropping infected animals or specific bacteria into the area.

is that he is alive, and this will turn out to be an intel spy game by either our side or OBL. If us, it will be designed to flush him out. If him, he us looking to plug a leak.

The US pressured Pakistan to put troops in the semiautonomous North Waziristan region and capture OBL.
After some minor successes and failures including the recent
killing of a Tribal leader in August that started widespread
unrest, Pakistan decided to pull out of the area.
Sometime around Sept 2-3 they announe a truce agreement with
pro-Taliban militants that says they will withdraw Pakistan troops if the militants don't use the area as a staging ground to attack Afghanistan.
This was seen a major defeat in the effort to capture OBL.
Coincidently we now have this story that he died.

I believe the story is a plant. As to OBL who knows.

Note: Somewhere I recall that the "funeral photo" was taken in July. Shortly after that we engaged numerous Taliban forces and killed hundreds of them.

We should treat this with caution, since they could be trying a ruse. And we should treat the Taliban, AQ in Iraq and anybody who associates with those terrorists who actively targeted civilians while proclaiming their alliegance with AQ and likeminded organizations like the diseased animals that they've become and simply eliminate them. Sooner or later, we'll manage to work our way up the food chain and find out for ourselves if OBL is truly dead. Then we make sure that he and the rest of the leaders of the death cult within modern Islam are dead.

Be slow and deliberate, just like the terrorists. Only we're working in reverse.

Is actually Better than dead by US hands. Especially dead by such a pathetic disease as Typhoid that is gone in the West.

Dead by US hands and he becomes a Martyr. If we kill him in combat, he goes out a hero. If he dies in prison, they will spend the entire time he's in custody trying to free him. And he will Still die a hero.

Dead by Disease and he's just dead. A simple, inelegant, Stupid death. He is shown to be just a man and not a prophet or a superhero. Dead by a disease the West has wiped out and he is shown to be the enemy ofthose that Could and Would like to save people from such an end.

Typhoid fever (or enteric fever) is an illness caused by the bacterium Salmonella Typhi. Common worldwide, it is transmitted by ingestion of food or water contaminated with feces from an infected person. The bacteria then multiply in the blood stream of the infected person and are absorbed into the digestive tract and eliminated with the waste.
After infection, symptoms include:

a high fever from 103 F to 104 F that rises slowly

chills

bradycardia (slow heart rate)

weakness

diarrhea (the idea of him crapping his pants/dress)

headaches

myalgia (muscle pain),

lack of appetite

constipation

stomach pains

in some cases, a rash of flat, rose-colored spots called "rose spots"

in some cases, loss of hair resulting from the prolonged high fever - (think of his beard falling out)

extreme symptoms such as intestinal perforation or hemorrhage, delusions and confusion are also possible.

Is it too much to hope for? If this is how he went and it was very slow and lasted for weeks I'd be perfectly OK with that. Do you think there will be video?

Here's more, it really does sound nasty.....

S. typhi must be ingested to cause disease. Transmission often occurs when a person in the carrier state does not wash hands thoroughly (or not at all) after defecation and serves food to others. This pathway is sometimes called the fecal-oral route of disease transmission. In countries where open sewage is accessible to flies, the insects land on the sewage, pick up the bacteria, and then contaminate food to be eaten by humans.

After being swallowed, the S. typhi bacteria head down the digestive tract, where they are taken in by cells called mononuclear phagocytes. These phagocytes are cells of the immune system, whose job it is to engulf and kill invading bacteria and viruses. In the case of S. typhi, however, the bacteria are able to survive ingestion by the phagocytes, and multiply within these cells. This period of time, during which the bacteria are multiplying within the phagocytes, is the 10 to 14-day incubation period of typhoid fever. When huge numbers of bacteria fill an individual phagocyte, they spill out of the cell and into the bloodstream, where their presence begins to cause symptoms.

The presence of increasingly large numbers of bacteria in the bloodstream (bacteremia) is responsible for an increasingly high fever, which lasts throughout the four to eight weeks of the disease in untreated individuals. Other symptoms of typhoid fever include constipation (at first), extreme fatigue, headache, joint pain, and a rash across the abdomen known as rose spots.

The bacteria move from the bloodstream into certain tissues of the body, including the gallbladder and lymph tissue of the intestine (called Peyer's patches). The tissue's response to this invasion causes symptoms ranging from inflammation of the gallbladder (cholecystitis) to intestinal bleeding to actual perforation of the intestine. Perforation of the intestine refers to an actual hole occurring in the wall of the intestine, with leakage of intestinal contents into the abdominal cavity. This leakage causes severe irritation and inflammation of the lining of the abdominal cavity, which is called peritonitis. Peritonitis is a frequent cause of death from typhoid fever.

Other complications of typhoid fever include liver and spleen enlargement, sometimes so great that the spleen ruptures or bursts; anemia, or low red blood cell count due to blood loss from the intestinal bleeding; joint infections, which are especially common in patients with sickle cell anemia and immune system disorders; pneumonia caused by a bacterial infection-- usually Streptococcus pneumoniae-- which is able to take hold due to the patient's weakened state; heart infections; and meningitis and infections of the brain, which cause mental confusion and even coma. It may take a patient several months to recover fully from untreated typhoid fever.

although we assume that he is indeed dead! (Or pssibly still living the good life in Argentina, depending on which CT you want to believe)

I personally believe that Osama bin Laden has been a cave painting for quite some time now! AND, I suspect that our government has been aware of his demise...hence the comment from our Commander in Chief when he said he was no longer concerned with OBL!

Fred Barnes reported that President Bush told him that capturing Osama bin Laden is not "a paramount goal of the war on terror."

In a White House press briefing he said this:

Deep in my heart I know the man is on the run, if he's alive at all. Who knows if he's hiding in some cave or not; we haven't heard from him in a long time. And the idea of focusing on one person is -- really indicates to me people don't understand the scope of the mission.

Our President knows that the GWOT is not about one man, but about an ideology.
