or maybe not

In an interview with a German television station broadcast Monday, Olmert appeared to list Israel among the world's nuclear powers, violating the country's long-standing policy of not officially acknowledging that it has atomic weapons.

Asked by the interviewer about Iran's calls for the destruction of Israel, Olmert replied that Israel has never threatened to annihilate anyone.

"Iran openly, explicitly and publicly threatens to wipe Israel off the map," Olmert said. "Can you say that this is the same level, when you are aspiring to have nuclear weapons, as America, France, Israel, Russia?"

We’re supposed to believe this was an inadvertent slip by a seasoned Israeli pol and not an indirect response to the craziness in Tehran.

god, I loved that one. One of the best "mistakes"...in my book.

Maybe he was letting Iran know that while Ahmadinejad boasts about developing nuclear weapons to wipe Israel off the face of the Earth, Israel already posesses such weapons.

I think the US should use Israel as our "Avenging Angel" in the Middle East. The US is the main reason the nation of Israel exists, both from foreign aid to military support. I think we both benefit from this relationship and should always equip Israel with the tools to fight terror since we share a common enemy, Islamic Facism.

I think Israel will use their nuclear weapons in the near future. They are not going to be wiped off the face the Earth quietly, they remember all too well the Holocaust. Israel knows the world hates them, but they would rather be hated and alive then destroyed and loved.

I think we should openly stand up with them and kick some butt. Both countries have a stake in fighting Islamic facism, and neither should leave it to the other to fend for its self.

Israel never admits it, but everyone knows it.

And if the US or the world doesn't stop Iran quickly and Iran gets close to having a nuclear first strike capability, Israel will prove it to the world.

I think Iran is the biggest ticking time bomb in the world right now, and no one seems to be gearing up to do something (other than empty diplomatic posturing). They're openly pursuing a nuiclear capability against world consensus, and threatening to wipe Israel off of the map. What more do we need to do something?

This is going to get ugly.

who started the nuclear arms race in the Middle East. That is why Olmert is back tracking and being asked to resign by his political enemies.

Iran knows through its use of spying that Israel has nukes. One reason Iran has cited for 'developing' nuclear technology is to deter Israel.

Of course, which country do you think would actually use them? Which country would give them to terrorists?

I'd been aware of the "Israel has 300 nukes" statements being thrown around for at least the previous few years to this. It usually gets thrown at us by someone voicing some manner of solidarity with the terrorists who'd have been so busy trying to detonate their village idiots around unarmed Israeli grandmothers and children on a bus, at the pizza parlors, and so forth. And if this were confirmed, I'd feel better about it than if Iran were to turn up with 300 nukes of their own, simply because I expect the Israelites to behave as a civilized nation and start the next war using them (end it, perhaps, but only if a nuke or some other WMD was detonated in their territory first). What I'm more afraid of in this case is Iran (or someone else) slipping one in under the radar, either through one of its proxies or someone else willing to take the job, and letting them pull it off over here.

Was I posting that? How did that get out? Excuse me... (sounds of video monitor screen breaking under impact from human head-butt)

It was a diplomatic posture but there was no ambiguity at all about Israel's nuclear capability, or how they got it.

I must say, I really don't buy into the idea Iran is going to nuke Israel. The Iranians see themselves as the natural leaders of the region... not as the country to be incinerated by an Israeli counterattack. Besides, Iran's influence over Syria and with terror groups is because of the Israeli 'menace.' Take away Israel, you turn Iran back into the evil Persians trying to push poor Arabs around.
