Profiles In Courage

John McCain and Joe Lieberman continue to defy the gods of political popularity and insist on supporting a policy because they believe it to be right, rather than believing it to be the flavor-of-the-month. Whether one agrees with them or not, one should certainly admire their bravery. Too bad that McCain and Lieberman get vilified instead of merely getting politely disagreed with.

Do I support McCain-Feingold? No. Has McCain's immigration policy been off-base? You betcha. Nonetheless, McCain has been nothing short of heroic when it comes to the single greatest issue of our time, the GWOT. Let's face it: the guy has backbone, and he knows what we need to do in Iraq. He looked like a man amongst boys during the FNC NH GOP debate on national sercurity issues, and he was calling for this surge strategy back in 2003. I was skeptical of him as a potential nominee a few months ago, but he has turned my head and earned my respect.

He's right about one thing only.

Someone who sticks to his guns when he's right is heroic. If he's wrong, he's just dangerous.

IMHO, the immigration problem is far more important to us in the long run than the GWOT, and McCain is dead wrong on that.

We've traded our National Sovereignty for cheap roofing and yardwork.

Is McCain a war hero? Yes.

Is he a man of conviction? Yes, no matter what the cost.

Is he willing to fight the war in Iraq and Afghanistan? Yes, probably better than the current President.

However, it cannot be said that he is strong on national security while his stance on border security is open borders/amnesty. These two positions are mutually exclusive. (By the way, I'm not buying his recent change of heart on border security.)

Not only does McCain not get the security implications of open borders, he's willing to spit in our eye over the issue with his "my friends" crap. I will not support an open borders candidate, particularly one who claims to be Mr. National Security. Do you hear me Rudy? McCain? Yes, I have the same issue with President Bush. He doesn't get it either.

I'll wager that if Bin Laden does manage to pull something off this fall, it will be with people he has snuck over the border or who have entered the country illegally since 9/11/2001. Anybody want to give me action on that wager?

Sending our best and brightest off to fight in a foreign land while at the same time making little or no effort to seal terrorists out at our own borders is at least inconsistent. Personally, I would go so far as to say it is offensive and cheapens the sacrifice our real heros are making overseas.

his considerable political talents and spend personal political capital on issues like "torture" and immigration and not do so with the war. Where is he in conversations with his "friends"?

Sorry, no sale on McCain.
