Sigh. Must We Go Through This Again?

That is a picture the New York Times does not want you to see. They want you to forget the destruction that befell America on September 11, 2001. They want you to forget the horror. They want you to forget the tragedy. No major media outlet in the United States will show these pictures. "Too traumatizing" is how these pictures are described. "Too traumatizing" is apparently a euphemism for "they make American's remember what they're fighting for."
But, they do want you to feel sorry for Jose Padilla. They want you to see the pictures of poor Jose. They want you to remember the "abuse" and "torture" he has suffered at the hands of the Regime of Bush.
They want to play down the fact that Mr. Padilla plotted to blow up a radiological dirty bomb inside the United States -- instead, Mr. Padilla is merely accused by "Le Regime Bush" of "plotting a dirty bomb attack." But make no mistake, they aren't trying to underplay how evil Mr. Padilla's detainers have been.
To Mr. Padilla’s lawyers, the pictures capture the dehumanization of their client during his military detention from mid-2002 until earlier this year, when the government changed his status from enemy combatant to criminal defendant and transferred him to the federal detention center in Miami. He now awaits trial scheduled for late January.
I'd wonder where the New York Times' sympathies lie, but it's been pretty obvious for the past few years.

That majority of the New York Times readers aren't all that keen on seeing those pictures. Then again many of them were there and/or lost loved ones on that day so I doubt they really need to be reminded.

The portion of the country that is represented by the editors and publishers of the Times could use a refresher. Unfortunately, that refresher is likely to come in another attack from the practioners of the Religion of Perpetual Outrage that the Times and the liberals are busy sucking up to right now.
In case you missed it, we're at war. And as for Padilla, he should be tried for treason and hung. Quickly.

...explain to me again what it has to do with Iraq. The man responsible for that picture is sitting untouched somewhere in Pakistan or thereabouts. Also explain how it justifies the way in which our military has betrayed our sons, daughters, fathers, parents, etc. in their conduct of this war.
Please elaborate. Hurry though, I am sure the hourglqass has been turned.

who wants to bring the carny, red scythe of death down upon the Pakistanis. Like Col. Kurtz in The Heart of Darkness, you have passed the third stage and have only darkness and desolation left in your withered soul! The Horror!
2006 is done, 2008 is another day and another fight
It's all just... pictures and stories to you, isn't it, Sparky? None of this is really real in your head; and you can't even talk about any of this without first translating it into your personal narrative.
My only regret is that somebody else gacked you while I was busy looking on with distaste.

what is "gacked"?
don't know what it means, but i like it.

I see nothing about Iraq in Pejman's post, or the comments preceding yours. Do you have a day job as an overhead projector?
The point is the media loves to show anything anti-American such as Abu Ghraib under free speech but censors any 9/11 photos/video to protect us from "disturbing" images. I find the stories sympathetic to Padilla extremely "disturbing".
If you most often find yourself arguing the exceptions rather than the rule you just might be on your own slippery slope to irrelevance. -CommonCents
I couldn't agree with you more, this sympathy is so disturbing. But it's even more widespread than you think. Not only is it prevalent among the MSM and fringe liberals, but I was shocked to find that the CIA itself spouted such bleeding heart crap in this 1960 study on Russian brainwashing:
http://www.foia.cia.gov/browse_docs_full.asp?doc_no=0000886487&title=BRA...
"The effects of isolation, anxiety, fatigue, lack of sleep, uncomfortable temperatures, and chronic hunger produce disturbances of mood, attitudes, and behavior in nearly all prisoners. The living organism cannot entirely withstand such assaults.
The Communists do not look upon these assaults as 'torture'. Undoubtedly, they use the methods which they do in order to conform, in a typical legalistic manner, to Communist theory which demands that 'no force or torture be used in extracting information from prisoners.' But these methods do constitute torture and physical coercion and should never be considered otherwise."
Thank God that some men with balls reformed the CIA and brought it around to the reasonable view of the average, patriotic American, that the Russian communists were 100% right. I hope and pray that we never return to the hippie days of the 60's!
They want to play down the fact that Mr. Padilla plotted to blow up a radiological dirty bomb inside the United States
That seems to be the policy of the government as well. If you continue reading the article:
Mr. Padilla was added as a defendant in a terrorism conspiracy case already under way in Miami. The strong public accusations made during his military detention — about the dirty bomb, Al Qaeda connections and supposed plans to set off natural gas explosions in apartment buildings — appear nowhere in the indictment against him. The indictment does not allege any specific violent plot against America.
We can't shoot them all on the battlefield, and we can't keep them locked up forever. Somebody better figure out how to do this right.
Like it or not, terrorists are going to be put on trial. Pardon me for wanting them to be convicted of actual terrorism charges instead of tax evasion or credit card fraud.
As for suggestions, I think the UK Terrorism Act is a good place to start.
Not if I were in charge. We shot the SOB's in WWII, but shooting is too dignified for these b*astards - hang 'em and let them twist slowly in the wind.

He was arrested at Chicago's O'Hare Airport in May 2002. Should he have just been shot on sight in the middle of the food court?

I agree. We should hang everyone that we think might commit a terrorist act in the future, just like we did in World War II. Trials, courtrooms, juries, evidence, and waiting for people to commit crimes are for sissies.

Has Padilla been convicted of anything yet? Because the longer the gov't waits to convict, the more it makes me think he is innocent like Brandon Mayfield.

but is this the same NYT that for a long period after 9/11, wrote small profiles about the victims? That actually seemed to do more to bring home the costs of the attack than showing a photo that may be powerful to some, but sensational to others. Speaking only for myself, learning about the lives and loved ones lost as a result of the attack meant more to me than watching people jump from windows.
As well, the vast majority of media, local and national, print and TV, run stories or at least note the passing of those killed in Iraq and Afghanistan when that death is confirmed. Often, these are sentimental stories that take pains to describe the fallen person's patriotism and sense of duty. That is hardly the action of a liberal media working tooth-and-nail against the war.
Additionally, the photos of Pedilla fall under the classification of "news"--that is, they are new (at least in terms of not really being seen by the wide public), and that is the prime driver, I suspect, not some need to manufacture sympathy. Do you really think that any details about the charges--should more be released--would be ignored by the MSM? I mean, we are talking about a dirty bomb here, and one reason the MSM is rather vague of the details is because relatively few details have been released.
I have major problems with the MSM--its sensationalism and superficial tendencies are at the top, not an imagined liberal conspiracy.
IMAGINED? Perhaps you just arrived from another country. If so, may I recommend the book "Bias" by Bernard Goldberg? Or just turn on CBS, NBC, ABC, PBS, CNN, MSNBC... take your pick.
That's the name he chose for himself and I can't understand why the media and especially the Times never use it. Well yes I can, a little easier to garner sympathy for this American[?], the chosen name being a possible encumbrance. Not that they edit the news and facts, oh no.
The photo shown indicates a man's feet sticking out from a cell, a beastly torture if I ever saw one, imagine, his feet! What kind of nation have we become? Although it is possible his guards, Dick Durbin's SS models, were about to put leg irons on him but never mind. Until Abdullah is transferred to Trump Towers I'm going on a hunger strike, for solidarity's sake.

There are those of us who did lose friends or relatives on that day.
I am one of them.
I need no reminder that my brothers and people I grew up with were murdered by Islamic Terrorists on that sunny Septemper morning.
chw asks:"...explain to me again what it has to do with Iraq".
Here ya go chw; While Iraq may or may not have had anything to do with the attacks of 9/11, the attacks on 9/11 had everything to do with why the United States went into Iraq.
We were no longer going to allow a threat to fester and grow.
We were taking the fight to the enemies of the United States where ever we could find them.
Make no mistake that the regime of Saddam Hussien was indeed an enemy of the U.S.
I'm glad we went after him and I'm glad he at least sits in a jail cell awaiting execution.
I'm disappointed that we have allowed Iran and Syria to obstruct our efforts in Iraq without making them feel the sting of American Military Might.
Somewhere along the way the war against Islamic extremism became a political football.
It became one because the attacks on this country on 9/11 were allowed to slip out of the American conscienceness.
We Forgot.
But I can never forget.
Too many friends died that day for me to ever forget.
Do not attempt to label me a chicken hawk, I served my country in the uniform of the United States Army and should it come to it,I would shoulder a weapon and stand on the bulwark of "Freedom's Frontier" once again.
"Never Forget" it's not just a catchy phrase that we spoke in the days after 9/11,it means that we must never forget what was brought to our cities that day and we must do every thing possible to destroy those who would destroy us.
I can never forget, the rest of America Never Should.
Find the enemy and kill them.
When ever and Where ever we can.
Iraq,Iran,Syria, etc,,,,where ever we find them, kill them.
The enemy deserve nothing less.
"You never need a firearm, until you need it BADLY!"
Isn't Padilla a US citizen? While I do not support giving terrorists caught on the battlefield access to our courts, I do support reserving that right for US citizens regardless of how screwed up they are.

.....that a conservative appeals court judge on the 4th Circuit and darling of the conservative cause resigned his judgeship after writing an opinion that denied the government's request to transfer Padilla to civilian custody before the Supreme Court could here an appeal in Padilla's case...?
Quoting from a WSJ news article discussing the judicial opinion delivered by 4th Circuit Judge J. Michael Luttig---denying the government's request to transfer Padilla to civilian custody in Dec 2005:
"The government's abrupt change in course" appeared designed "to avoid consideration of our decision by the Supreme Court," Judge Luttig wrote. The government's actions suggested that "Padilla may have been held for these years...by mistake" and, even worse, that the government's legal positions "can, in the end, yield to expediency." Such tactics, Judge Luttig warned, could exact a "substantial cost to the government's credibility before the courts."
.
including this one, are troubled by the government's actions in this case. Southerners, especially, are aware of Ex parte Milligan and many of us have stories like Ambrose Bierce's "Incident at Owl Creek" in our family memories. What ever else he was and is, Padillo is an American citizen, arrested on American soil, and the civilian courts were functioning. I'd like to see him hang, but only after a fair trial in a civilian court.
Just to be clear though, had he been taken by the military on foreign soil, shot on sight or after a drumhead court martial would not trouble me at all regardless of his citizenship.
In Vino Veritas

Note to Padilla's lawyers and the New Yashmak Times:
Padilla dehumanized himself. Convicted of aggravated assault as a gangbanger even before he became an "enlightened terrorist", Padilla left the human race and became a predatory animal long before he went into custody as an enemy combatant.
I agree with you Erick, more pictures and reminders of the victims and the plight of the civilized world are in order instead of the NYT's sympathy for the devil.
