Update on Somalia

and on potential terrorism in the US

From "Inside the Ring," we learn that some of the Islamic militants captured in Somalia after the US-Ethiopian intervention hold US passports, and may even be US citizens. These are not misguided youths trying to find themselves in an alternative culture:

According to our sources, one of the American Islamists had received pilot training in the past, an indication that he may be a terrorist who could be used in a future al Qaeda operation to hijack an aircraft and use it as a missile, as occurred during the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon.

Again, this guy has a US passport. He can come and go as he pleases. Or at least he used to be able to before he was captured. There are those who decry our participation in this operation as further evidence of clumsy US meddling in a region where we have no business, but it looks like the intervention in Somalia may turn out to have been the ounce of prevention is worth many pounds of cure.

Along these lines, Ethiopia is performing something of a public service in the region: "Ethiopia likely intends to eliminate as many of the radical Islamists and their camps as possible before withdrawing." That's a very good thing, as every indication is that foreign al Qaeda operatives were planning to make Somalia into a Taliban-style terrorist sponsoring state. And it seems we have been doing a little eliminating of our own in a second airstrike against al Qaeda and/or Islamic Court militants, which is more good news for those who believe that in this case, elimination is the most prudent policy.

thank you for keeping this issue and area relevant.

As you know, it saddens me that more of our readers don't appear engaged in this front on the war on terror.

well done
