I got word this morning from Gathering of Eagles that the Vietnam Veterans Memorial had been vandalized, so I headed over to check it out for myself. Sure enough, I found several stones covered with an oily substance.
In the above photo (and others available on Flickr), you'll noticed that the memorial has been sprayed toward the bottom of the wall with some kind of black substance. Free Republic has also posted photos.
I spoke to a National Park Service employee who was livid that someone would vandalize the memorial. "It's like defacing a grave," he told me. When I asked if there were any clues as to who was responsible, he told me videotape was being reviewed. It is believed the damage was done on Friday night. Because the monument never closes, it could have taken place late in the evening when no one was around.
The most tragic part of the vandalism is that the damage appears to be permanent. The Park Service employee who talked to me said that the initial diagnosis was that the oily substance had stained the stone. He said another analysis would take place tomorrow.
At a time when America is particularly sentimental about the men and women who have given their lives for our country, this is a sad and unfortunate act. The coward who did it should be ashamed.

those responsible should be found, flogged, jailed until they are old, and then flogged again - their assets long since sold to cover the cost of replacement and repair of the monument.
If accidental (and I'm only allowing for this as a very unlikely possibility), then asset forfeiture should cover the bill to fix the monument.

Maybe someone who has reality issues did this. Yesterday, I saw a woman crossing the street in front of a car chanting unintelligible phrases. Twenty years ago, sho would be in a hospital. Now she roams the streets. There are all kinds of crazies out there who might have defaced this monument.
Phelps is a registered Democrat and has run for political office in Kansas as a Democrat.
You'll find no disagreement here that Phelps is "full of hate". I'll also note that he fits in well with the party he identifies with.

Who would want to piss off every sincere American conservative this way? Some NeoCon who never served. No veteran of ANY era would even THINK of defacing this amazing monument. There is a reference to video being checked. Watch out for "The cameras were all being serviced on that day, at that hour;" or some hooded ninja wearing nothing identifiable but a peace symbol will be passed off as evidence against the Blues. Who in the Hell would even know what could deface obsidian. If it made it into the MSM, some funeral monument maker would remember being asked about some acid by a guy who resembles an assistant to Karl Rove.
This incident stinks like the Anthrax delivery to Democrats. When the investigation revealed that the genetic coding in the delivered anthrax came from the US govt, we heard less about it. On 9 May 2002, New Scientist published an article that reported:

Some friendly advice: lay a foundation for your assertions. People (especially new ones) who fly around RedState on flying carpets soon get the rugs pulled out from under them by the directors (known in the vernacular as account termination).

John Kerry,Jane Fonda, Ramsay Clark, Walter Cronkite and their American leftist supporters did more than deface the Vietnam Wall by their support of the people who caused all the names to appear on that wall. Just as the American leftist terrorist supporters are causing many of the names that will appear on the Iraq Wall. American leftist terrorist supporters cause the deaths of US military personnel by aiding the enemy.
Used oil, perhaps? Seems like that would fit perfectly with the left's "No blood for oil!" anti-war chant.

That act really chaps my butt, I have several friends from school and several more from my unit in Nam on that wall.
It's sad that someone thinks that damaging the Wall will will make a statement for their cause.
