An almost open pre-debate thread

Well, we saw what Dan Rather called a "carefully scripted joint appearance" between the folks at the top of the ticket last week - and now we get to see their seconds do a little battle.

What I'd like to see here are your thoughts on tonight's debate: 1) What do Edwards and Cheney each NEED to do to NOT hurt their candidate, 2) How much value is there in VP candidates attacking each other and 3) Will hair beat no hair? Will smile beat no smile? Will the empty suit beat the grizzled veteran?

Edwards needs to get back out there. Where's ol' hair and smiles been? Dick Cheney's been all over the news for mumbling attacks on John Kerry. Edwards doesn't even seem to be in the race anymore.

If anything, John Edwards should try to show that he has the knowledge and experience necessary to be president. Cheney should try to convey at least a scintilla of charm. Neither candidate is likely to break their carefully-maintained molds.

Does anyone think that the VP could sway even one voter? Please find that voter!

Mr. Cheney will beat the Breck girl like a red-headed stepchild, and he should. Edwards is nothing more than Kerry's proxy. No one really cares what he thinks. The VP should take this opportunity to say the things W should have said last week.

Moreover, Mr. Cheney is eminently suitable to the task. His gravitas and demeanor should shield him from the charge that a grown man should not beat up on a little boy with a cute smile and a funny accent.

Edwards should go back and review his Meet the Press debacle and try not to do that. His problem, though, is that his boss has painted him into a ridiculous corner. Not even a shyster as skilled as Edwards can talk his way out of the "global test" mess.

I kinda feel sorry for the Breck Girl, but his momma should have told him not to play with the big boys.

I think expectations are low for Darth compared to Luke, and that he will meet expectations.

Luke has a tougher row to hoe.

I can answer that in small part.  He's been trying (unsuccessfully) to court the union vote in the Steel Valley without having to face those polite but relentless pro-life Catholics from Steubenville, OH.

Last Wednesday he showed up to do an event in Weirton, WV across the river.  The event was at noon and ostensibly open to the public.  However, the public had to each go to the Democrat campaign headquarters to get a ticket.  Also, the event was indoors in a smaller venue - not much point in having a small number of people show up with signs that they couldn't get in with anyway.

The mistake they made was in choosing a town-hall format.  That enabled the intrepid Gabriel Hahn to show up and get his hands on the microphone.  Gabe admits that he probably took a little too long with his question.  In his defense though, he really was interested in hearing any answer that Mr. Edwards might have given.  He wanted to know why someone who talked so much about defending the downtrodden and defenseless, had no apparent interest in protecting the unborn.

Apparently, the organizers of the event didn't have the old New England town hall meeting in mind when they chose the format; they were thinking more along the lines of "echo chamber."  They quickly showed Mr. Hahn the door (outside of which he politely stood and gave interviews to all of the local media, thus getting his message more effectively to Mr. Edwards' intended audience than if they had allowed him to stay for all of the rest of the incredibly boring "meeting").

It's fun to be at the crossroads of three battleground states!

Now that was a kick to the head.

And for the Kossacks out there - take a deep breath first.

He's serious, he's grave, he's agressive.
