Tomorrow is election day in Oklahoma

And if you thought ugly was Humpreys running attack ads (which got him scolded by Senator Nickles), this takes the cake:

In Oklahoma, where a hot GOP primary is happening on Tuesday, some outfit is conducting a push poll asking voters that - if they knew that former Congressman Tom Coburn had performed abortions in his medical practice - would they be more or less likely to vote for him. Coburn is a vehement opponent of abortion. He performed two in his long medical career: both to save the life of the mother. Coburn seems on the verge of winning the GOP primary without a run-off. That sub rosa push poll on abortion, designed to drive voters away from Coburn, may be enough to force him into a run-off with former Oklahoma Mayor Kirk Humphries, who broke his pledge not to run a negative campaign by unleashing two vicious commercials against Coburn in the waning days of the campaign.

Yuck. If Coburn is forced into a runoff tomorrow, we're going to have to suck it up, reach into our pockets, and make sure we get Coburn's back.

If this is true, it is outrageous, dishonest, and exactly the type of thing that makes good people stay away from politics.  I sincerely hope neither of the Humphreys or Anthony campaigns is involved.  Read Coburn's stance on abortion here:

Issues: Right-To-Life

As a practicing physician who has delivered about 4,000 babies and as a Congressman, Dr. Coburn is a committed defender of the sanctity of human life in all of its stages.

Dr. Coburn is staunchly opposed to abortion in all cases, with the lone and rare exception of when the life of the mother is endangered. He is, likewise, opposed to euthanasia, physician assisted suicide and destructive embryonic stem cell research.

I hope voters are smart enough to be suspicious of the rumor mill.  But if this forces a run-off, it'll be time to dig in and help give Coburn the money to set the record striaght.

In today's Daily Oklahoman, Coburn said "that his quick rise in the race, despite his late start, was attributable in part to his reputation for keeping his word. He mentioned specifically the fact that he walked away from the House after three terms, as he said he would." He "said he thought Humphreys made decisions that weren't good for his campaign or the race", but that, "I have a great deal of respect for Kirk Humphreys. I think he's a good man."

Because you can never pay too much for someone who wants the death penalty for abortionists?

You can never work too hard for someone who has the right principles, is quoted out of context, and then explains himself just to have that explanation ignored by those who don't vote in Republican primaries anyway. Thanks, friend.

(or ma'am)..

I sincerely hope you don't believe that the majority of pro-life people are in favor of mudering doctors who perform abortions.  That not only would be the height of irony but would detract from the serious debate we have today on life vs. liberty and over when life begins.

I of course will operate on the assumption that you do understand the subtleties of this issue and just felt like making an ad hominem attack.  That is the exact kind of negative politics that we are decrying here.

If you do believe what you had posted, I'm just sad, and sorry.

How exactly were Coburn's remarks taken out of context?

When the comment was made, the Kossacks had quite the time pilloring Coburn as a guy who wanted to go out and execute abortionists tomorrow. That's not what Coburn meant, and it took a stretch to get there. What he did clarify was his hope that abortion would be once again made illegal and that innocent life protected to THE SAME EXTENT as the rest of us. Not that anyone spent a lot of time reporting that.

This underhanded tactic matches Humphreys' strategic style...it also matches that of Karl Rove. But Coburn has performed abortions, so the poll's claim is true. I've seen far worse push polls.

You can type that with a straight face. The push poll is clearly meant to imply that Coburn has somehow ignored his principles, that he's a hypocrite - and that he performed elective abortions. That's not true, and no whining about what you believe, under whatever influence, that Karl Rove has done anything similar.
