The victims

Sometimes you think the American left has learned to curb its excesses.  Indeed, this is what the likes of the Kerry campaign want you to think.  And then you see things like the DNC, and the idiot contretemps over Instapundit's egregious racism, and you realize that at bottom it hasn't changed at all.

You can read the links to Atrios and Gilliard for yourself.  Suffice it to say that a man who hammered at the Trent Lott story and called for his resignation again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again  -- and then expressed satisfaction when the resignation occurred -- probably isn't a racist.  (That's maybe half of Reynolds's Lott posts, by the bye.  I got tired of copying the URLs.)

Oh yeah, and then there's his family.  Well.

It's the classic leftist mindset in action: dour, humorless, paranoid, endlessly ready to proclaim righteous victimhood on the thinnest pretext -- and assuming the most vile of evils (no, not killing the unborn -- racism) of its ideological opponents.  Surprising?  No.  A useful reminder, in fact.  Seeing the likes of Atrios and Gilliard in high dudgeon initially inspires feelings of high dudgeon in return.  But upon reflection, a more considered response emerges to the tomfoolery and smears that are so edifying to the rest of America:

More of this, please.

I hope Glenn can forgive me for laughing so hard about this. He probably can. He's a pretty reasonable guy.

Watch as he works himself up into a righteous fit based on the notion that "Celebrate Diversity" is encoded racism because the caption is in the pan-African colors, and what with guns and diversity and Africa and all, Reynolds must be advocating race war.

Then look at the photo above, (also on Gilliard's site) clearly showing Reynolds in the black t-shirt with a white-and-yellow caption.

Someday somebody should write a book on how the Left lost their sense of humor.

"pan-African colors" my tuchas. red-->orange-->yellow-->green [and if the letters had been a bit taller --->blue]... is the effing RAINBOW.

Pan-African colors

According to the UNIA, the panafrican colors are red, black, and green, "red representing the noble blood that unites all people of African ancestry, the color black for black people whose dignity is upheld by the existence of the flag, green for the abundant natural wealth of the Motherland, Africa". Designated the official colors of the African Race by the UNIA at its convention in Madison Square Garden on August 13, 1920 in New York City.

Those are the colors used in Kwanzaa celebrations.

And let's lay it out, shall we? The Left's "celebrate diversity" is a fraud. They do not tolerate any deviation from their dogma. They don't tolerate capitalists, pro-lifers, flat-taxers, anti-Affirmative action, voucher supporters, private schools, home schoolers, Christians, conservative or Republican university professors, et al.

I mean, look how they "tolerate" Powell and Rice (you know, the "house n****").

To a racist T-shirt meant to marginalize cereal-endorsing birds.

Mental health advocates also criticize the slogan, "Cuckoo for Cocoapuffs."

"Brian, there's a message in my AlphaBits. It says 'OOOOOOOO'."

"Peter, those are Cheerios."

or never look a Monkey straight in the eye

Who knew  Maybe, just maybe, Atrios and Gilliard was doing it for the children.  At least they were, ah, well trying to protect the child that got bit by the "Monkey"

Yeah that's it!

I agree that Leftist politicos should say their piece and be judged on its merits.  Reasonable people can see through that.

What drives me crazy is tacitus' second paragraph citing a number of points hoping to provide prima facie evidence that Professor Reynolds isn't a racist.

I've done it myself, but there's nothing so pathetic as watching a white man trying to prove he isn't racist.  No one should have to do that.

For such an excellent Family Guy reference.

You could also have referenced the scene where Peter puts on an afro wig and makes a joke about getting money through a minority scholarship.

Or this one:

Peter: It's a kishiki, and don't call me Peter, that's my slave name!  From now on, call me Kichwa-tempo!

Chris: Cool! And I'll be Manbooto-O'Mally!

Red, Green and Black?  Sounds like Christmas at night.  I guess that makes the Yuletime holiday potentially racist too.

I mean, gathering around the tree and hanging stuff on it could really be taken pretty badly (in a symbolic way).

Sheesh, and I always thought it was just a celebration of the birth of Christ.

....there's nothing so pathetic as watching a white man trying to prove he isn't racist.

Except for a man flinging about the accusation on thin pretexts.
