Specter Smacks the Right

Ramesh Ponnuru, writing at the Corner, points out that Arlen Specter has hired a former general counsel of the NAACP to handle committee nominations.

You may recall the controversy that arose when Elaine Jones, the head of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, was revealed to have asked Ted Kennedy to delay the confirmation of some of President Bush's judicial nominees in order to affect litigation in which her organization was involved. Jones ended up resigning during that controversy.

Now Arlen Specter, in one of his first acts as chairman of the Judiciary Committee in a Republican Senate, is hiring one of the NAACP's top lawyers. Specter wanted Hannibal G. Williams II Kemerer, who has been the group's assistant general counsel, to handle nominations for the committee. There has been resistance to that idea, however, and Kemerer appears likely to take over other duties on the committee.

This does not bode well for conservatives, given the NAACP's historic objections to all things not lefty.

Why bloggers that opposed Specter as Chairman were simply overreacting, overreaching, and ruining conservative plans for the court? I'm disgusted.

I hope Hugh Hewitt is keeping an eye on this.

I told you so.

. . .he backed down when challenged--it seems that he remains well-gelded.  Still, it might be a good idea for someone to wander over to the wall in Frist's office where Specter's family jewels have been nailed and give them a good whack with a newspaper, just to remind him where he stands.

for Republicans and, particularly, conservatives, to learn the first maxim of politics: you must not only have the means to reward your friends, but the willingness to punish your enemies.  Specter is an enemy.  It is time to exact the punishment.

Pshaw.

  1. he'll have access to ALL committee documents.

  2. instead, we get lucky enough to have him working on tort reform.
