Second Term Fiscal Priorities

Captain Ed notes this article which says that President Bush is set to cap entitlement spending and government growth as a whole. This is a relief to those of us who sometimes scratched our heads in puzzlement over the Bush Administration's fiscal priorities, and were waiting for the Republicanism we voted for to emerge. To be sure, I have no problem with a number of the Administration's fiscal decisions--including tax cuts and defense spending. But non-defense discretionary spending continued to grow unabated, and it almost seemed at times that the Administration was afraid to put libertarian-conservative fiscal policies into practice.

Here is hoping then that this report about the Administration's new budget priorities is more than a tease. If it isn't, more and more Republicans will wonder what the difference is between voting for a Republican and voting for a Democrat. If memory serves, Barry Goldwater offered voters "a choice, not an echo" in 1964. As Goldwater's heirs, we are still supposed to be doing just that.
