We have a serious problem brewing

Fox news is now reporting that Iran's President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, in a speech today said the following:
"There is no doubt that the new wave (of attacks) in Palestine will wipe off this stigma (Israel) from the face of the Islamic world," Ahmadinejad told students Wednesday during a Tehran conference called "The World without Zionism.""Anybody who recognizes Israel will burn in the fire of the Islamic nation's fury, any (Islamic leader) who recognizes the Zionist regime means he is acknowledging the surrender and defeat of the Islamic world," Ahmadinejad said.
.
In a time when the media (and many of us) are almost solely focused on the "gates" of Washington; Miers-gate, Rove-gate, Libby-gate, etc, there are REALLY important things going on out there. It will change in the next hour or so but as of the posting of this diary NO ONE is running this story yet except FOX.
MoreWith all the arguing at RS the last few days about Iraq, and I'm just as guilty of this, we have focused on what the death toll is, whether it is or has been worth it and how much play mother nutjob will get from it. Meanwhile, Israel is being bombed and one of her neighbors has all but announced a new offensive. Oh yeah, they want nukes too.
With allegations of Syrians crossing into Iraq from the north, and allegations of Egypt running the Palestinian show, and likely other neighbors throwing their weight into this hotbed that we HAVEN'T proven yet, am I the only one that thinks we are rapidly heading toward the ultimate point of choosing Iraq? That we will be drawing this thing to a head, finally?
I hope there is some discussion here, but in any event, the day of reckoning is coming. As a fervent supporter of the strategy the left refuses to see or hear, we are going to find out who our friends are and who our enemies are. I wish I was 20 years younger. I'd be headed to Paris Island right now.
The Islamo Fascists are watching us. What will we do? Ignore these kinds of things in the press and convince them we are weak and afraid? Or do we stand up, united, and make them stand down?
and I'm WAY beyond the extended age...trust me.
From Al-Jazeera. Ahmadinejad was speaking at the "World Without Zionism" conference. See photo attached to article.
From the River to the Sea, from the River to the Sea. That's the goal, and it always has been the goal.
Iran making provocative statements against Israel, Syria being implicated in assassination in Lebanon, and Iraq flooding with foreign fighters....yep, the left is right, we have no business being over there.
It seems the enemies of freedom may be gearing up for action!
I have a feeling Sharon wont take this threat lightly.
We need to watch closely...
We could burry our heads in the sand and rename ourselves the "United States of Arabia"
Strange how the timing of the comments coincide the recent bomb blast ...there are baaaad people out there. I truly hope this isn't the start of another offensive
Who remembers, with no small amount of historical shame, that some people in Poland after the Nazis invaded did not struggle to prevent the extermination of the Jews there. Of course, there were many others who did struggle, heroically -- and who paid with their lives for doing so.
Of course, the Nazis also defined the Poles -- as a matter of legal code -- as Üntermenschen (subhumans, slaves to the Reich) anyway, and then after the war, the Communists took over and things got much better...
kind of off topic, but I wonder how Bolten will handle the issue of Syria, and the recent Iranian jab. I hope he pushes a hardline stance.
The rhetoric is nothing new for the Iranians; they've been calling for the death of our own country for the past 26 years. They're more concerned now with the potential loss of their Alawite allies in Syria, i.e the Assad regime/oligarchy, which has provided them a Shia (twelver) minority outpost on the Mediterranean and allowed them to exercise leverage in Lebanon through their proxy militia Hezbollah. The samovar-rattling is to muffle the noise of their balloons popping.
Around it. Clearly the Syrians (although there is no direct evidence of that -- I'll admit) and Iranians are ramping up the "kill the Jews" rhetoric all over again. I think it's in direct response to the weakening of the President in the United States and the recent developments in Lebanon. These statements don't come at these times for accidental reasons: the Iranians can read the news, and they know that the Administration is distracted and somewhat up against the ropes. We should be thanking our lucky stars that Bolton made it to the UN.
On the one hand you can just dismiss this statement by Ahmadinejad as more of his hardline bluster: we knew he was a zealot when he won the election, and he has to throw some red meat to his base of support every once in a while to keep them happy, but how can anyone construe the timing of this statement as accidental?
Daniel Pipes has recently opined that the Arab-Israeli conflict is not going to be solved until about 2035 because of what he sees as a severly flawed United States policy.
How Long Until the Arab-Israeli Conflict Ends? It's my belief that, had the Oslo diplomacy not taken place, the Arab-Israeli conflict would have ended about 2010. Due to that "peace process," however, the likely date for a resolution has receded a generation, to about 2035.
It's no exaggeration to say that statements like the one Ahmadinejad made today are supportive of that prediction. Of course, Ahmadinejad himself would like to see the conflict end well before that, on his terms, with the destruction of Israel. He is also deliberately provoking Israel in public by rattling his sword. So I suppose that we will now see whether our friends in the international community at the United Nations decide whose side they're on.
I would think that is best case scenario. Saber rattling or not, I thik htis is going to be a big deal, fairly soon.
Israel I believe does want peace, and/or more importantly, to be left alone. I think the leaving of the settlements has shown them to be seriously at the table.
Actions by Syrians, and Iranians, though we think may be benign, Israel will view different. I believe Israel has no problem acting unilaterally, and there will be a big problem.
Agree with you that hopefully Bolten, w/UN, can head this off.
I would think that is best case scenario.
Is something of an optimist, I agree. ;) But we will see whether these words translate into actions, and what the response from our U.N. ambassador is. This could develop into Bolton's first real test, and I agree with you -- it's happening very fast.
How hard could it be for anything to coincide with a suicide bombing against Jews? Attacks are so prevalent that the numbers are on your side after all.
Side Note: Can we dispense with being all nice during Ramadan? Seems like the Palistinians don't really care about it.

Was this the same guy we identified as taking part in the hostage situation?
FYI- the Army extended it's enlistment age.
