Nebraskan Tom Osborne to run for governor

Representative Tom Osborne (R-Nebraska), who won reelection in Nebraska's third CD with 87-percent of the vote, has announced that he is running for governor next year.
A former college football coach two decades removed from a double-bypass, he first has to win the Republican primary against Governor Dave Heineman -- who is filling the shoes of elected Governor Mike Johanns now that he is at the Ag Department -- and Omaha businessman David Nabity.
Now who's going to run against Ben Nelson? I'm sure the NRSC was hoping that Osborne would look their way, but they could look to Johanns in much the same way that they got former HUD Secretary Mel Martinez to run for Bob Graham's old seat in Florida last year.

I had hoped he would run for Emperor.
He would, of course, win.
Well it looks like a major Republican vs. Republican race for Governor then. It would be nice if one of these two heavy-weights would run for Senate against Nelson, but it doesn't look likely.
Will Osborne's campaign run a modern, pro style offense? Or will they fall back on the wishbone?
Come on, Osborne didn't run the wishbone. It was the I-formation option game for him!
As a Nebraskan, I'm disappointed by this. Osborne is a good guy, but he is too old. We need to infuse new people into the process. By running, he is sucking the oxygen out of the room for anyone else.
I wouldn't be so certain that this race is his to win, however. His previous showings took place in Nebraska's third district, which is mostly the extremely rural western part of the state. Osborne may not prove nearly as popular in Omaha or Lincoln.
THis is depressing becasue there shouldn't be a dem in the senate from nebraska. This should be a no brainer. And Osbourne needs to take one for the team. And dont kid yourselfs think he's not going to be as competative in Lincoln or Omaha. THis is NEbraska - and after you've won 3 national titles the kyes are yours.

You'd have to think Osborne is the odds-on favorite at this point. He remains hugely popular in football-mad Nebraska.
He'll have a lot of Cornhusker football support.
And it's a good decision, IMO. Who wouldn't rather be Governor than a Senator?
