RedState's First Podcast

Erick:

A few of the editors emailed and IM'ed back and forth recently about new things to do at RedState. One suggestion was a Podcast -- yes some of us do keep up with geek trends (dare I admit it was me).

That idea was met with enthusiasm by the editors and so we decided to proceed. This past weekend, I opened up Garageband to come up with some intro music, fired up Audio Hijack Pro, Skype, and Audacity and, along with Josh Trevino and Thomas Crown, produced RedState's first podcast. We hope to make this a weekly affair.

Listen to RedState's first podcast by clicking here.

This week we're talking about the Georgia voter ID law, liberal minds exploding due to the election of Pope Benedict XVI, and whether there really is a "Vast Right Wing Conspiracy."

We hope you enjoy the show. Please feel free to leave comments in the thread. And, please keep in mind that it was our first attempt with all the incumbent sound and technologies a first attempt involves.

Read on for technical information...

Most browsers and operating systems should happily play the podcast just by clicking the link above. It's a plain old MP3 file, and runs about 40 minutes long. The file size is about 30MB.

Like so many other things around here, podcasts are a new endeavor. And, unfortunately, the software that we use to run the site (Scoop) doesn't have a clean way to make a 'podcast aware' RSS feed for you to automatically download this and future 'casts. We're working on it, and hope to have something implemented soon.

Any comments or questions? Leave them here or contact us, as always, at info@redstate.org.

Thanks for listening!

I'm enjoying the podcast right now.  I assume it is hard to adjust over a Skype conference call, but the three voices are at different volumes from Trevino's quiet tones to Thomas' more booming voice.  That was just the first impression.

Heh.  That was a problem and will be.  Josh gets louder as the interview goes on.  My computer is the host, so I came in clearest.  It depends on distance from mic, quality of mic, etc.

I sound like a frog.  Not the French kind.

I think y'all did a great job.

Excellent first podcast.  I think this was a great idea, and it's only going to get better.

Kudos...and kudos, again.

Take a look at FeedBurner.com and see if you can get a proper RSS2 feed with enclosures. This will allow people to subscribe and have the content pushed automatically to their computers. It's not really podcasting until that happens. :-)

It's been there for a few months, but as of late last night all of the existing RedState RSS feeds are silently redirecting over there now.

If you refresh your feed, you should see the -enclosure- tags now.

A couple of suggestions:

  1. Paste in a RedState logo into the artwork for us iTunes and iPod Photo users.
  2. You may want to run the audio through Audacity to normalize the volume levels. I'm either straining to hear quiet voices or I'm wincing at the too-loud voices.
  3. The background noise is really distracting. If you guys get serious about this, pick up some good mics and a mixer for the host. (I like the Sennheiser e815s.)
  4. The intro tune is nice. Sounds like someone has a copy of GarageBand. Good work on that tune.

5. 40 minutes is a long time for a single listen. If you could also generate a parallel bookmarkable AAC version, iPod and iTunes listeners can keep track of where they last left off. Between devices.

on the line between the areas known as 'suggesting' and 'volunteering'.

I hope.

Is my fault. The recording studio in my house was closed for repairs, as was the clean room for on-site semiconductor wafer processing.

In all seriousness, this was sort of a spur of the moment thing. If I do it again, it'll be with background noise minimized as much as humanly possible.

My experience and knowledge is at your service. Even though I typically have strong disagreements with the site's editorial output. (Which is why I keep coming back for more punishment. :-] )

E-mail me offline at cjkarr@gmail.com and we can discuss how to accomplish some of the above.

shrug My first few attempts at podcasting were much worse. All things considered, you guys did a decent job with the exceptions of the nits above. I wonder what Erick did to get Skype and Audio Hijack to play nicely together. Everytime I tried the two, they crapped out at the worst moments.

Out of curiousity, what hardware were you using? Built-in mics? Windows? Mac?

Just WindowsXP, an ordinary Logitech headset, and a cheap shareware a friend cooked up to clean up the sound quality.

I used Soundflower, Audio Hijack Pro, and Audacity for editing.  Josh and I also used Logitech USB microphones for the best sound quality (though Josh kept his microphone volume down or something).

I used a three stage connection between Skype and AHP.  I'd love to take credit for it, but I can't.  I got the information here.

I did do the Garageband music and am quite proud of it.  It literally took 40 minutes to put together and over a day to make sure I really had the sound I wanted.

Macs by Erick

Josh and I use Macs.  We're elitist snobs who like the best.  (Clayton too)

Cue gratuitous Augustine linked cartoon that if I didn't like to, he would.

Good job on the podcast.  One note on the Voter ID issue here in Georgia.  The "Georgia Gang" reported on their Sunday broadcast that the Voter ID bill enjoyed 80% favorable support.  If Georgia's Democrats think this issue will sweep them back into power, they're dreaming. :-)

Podcast strikes me as a bit too technical.  I like the ring of "Redstate Radio".  I've sent in a possible logo upgrade for Redstate Radio.  On a related note, great job on the podcast itself.  I hope this experiment turns into a key feature of the site.

Your assistance is much appreciated.

Good first attempt. I won't bother mentioning some of the technical problems. Those can be fixed. I don't expect studio quality until Redstate gets enough money rolling in to afford a real office (one can dream).

The quality of discussion was what really impressed me. Erick, Josh, and Thomas did a great job talking about politics in an intellectual, learned way. It was almost Buckley-like. Can't wait to hear more.

P.S. If you ever want another voice, let me know.

Gentlemen,

I enjoyed the podcast so much I played an excerpt on my podcast today. I cleaned up some of the explosive "p" pops, and a few of the "uh's" and "you know's" and came up with the best 5 minutes I could find. It includes the discussion of conspiracies on the right and left.

My podcast also has two other podcasters excerpts, and a read from Little Green Footballs summarizing the Google news editorial policy that lets UFO and neo-Nazi sites in, but not right wing site, and how Google Ads bashing Delay are o.k. but not those targeting Pelosi.

Give it a listen if you get a minute.
