When You Lie Down With Dogs . . .

It's nice and noteworthy to see that Howard Dean is denouncing the dip into anti-Semitism taken in connection with yesterday's faux hearings on Capitol Hill. I don't believe for a moment that the overwhelming majority of Democrats share those kinds of ugly sentiments--in fact, I am sure that they believe quite the opposite. Having said that, when a political party dabbles in conspiracy theories to the degree that the Democrats appear to be doing and when it engages in circus-like rhetoric and behavior, it should come as no surprise whatsoever that it will attract a number of luantics to the show and that it will be confronted with those lunatics at every turn.

Want to deny lunacy a forum? Great. The best thing to do is to grow up, act responsibly, make your honestly held and believed arguments with as much passion and fervor as you believe appropriate to the occasion and understand that if you step over the bounds of decency, the shadows will come out to embrace you while the rest of society watches in justified revulsion.

The people who convened the hearings are elected officials (remember? voting? people show up and mark their preference for who represents them?).

Well, you may not like these hearings, but they have every right to hold them. It's what elected officials do. Like the hearings into Bill Clinton's lies regarding Lewinsky.

They are hearings P.Yousefzadeh. Not lynchings, but actual hearings. People get to speak their mind. Remember? It's what America is known for - people can speak their mind. These particular people are e-l-e-c-t-e-d- officials - it's their duty.

If you don't like it, why not propose lock them up?

Because they are held without authority, proper investigation, and the other things that make Congressional hearings authorized.

Yes, elected officials can do pretty much what they want. that does not make the event less of a phony hearing.

Fear not, it will likely be back eventually; the acorn never falls far from the tree.

Dean may have tossed it out, but it got in the  door of DNC headquarters in the first place because it wasn't crystal clear that it simply was not acceptable from the "get go." They invited a virulent anti-Israeli type to their Alice in Wonderland "impeachment" hearing. They have not only tolerated, they have encouraged, the most extreme of views in their quest to damage George Bush.

If anti-semitism doesn't show up again soon, it will be something else equally reprehensible. Oh, wait it already did over in the Senate chamber.
