The Second and sometimes the most important amendment to the US Constitution

"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

The most important amendment to the Constitution is again showing that in the news today. In Gaza, there is an agreement for the land to go to the Palestinian state. Israelis are being literally carried out of their homes. The Framers of the Constitution knew that there could be a politician some day that would give in to the nature of power and start infringing on the rights of the citizens. Because of the second amendment there will never be a mass infringement like in Gaza.

As I watched the news this morning seeing soldiers in the homes of the citizens, forcing them to leave, I made the statement, "There would be a bunch of injured soldiers if that happened here." All I can say is "Thank God we live in a land where this could not happen."

That is not entirely true. In a direct violation of the Constitution recent Supreme Court decisions have allowed further expansion on imminent domain laws. The people have to take a stand and vote against the leaders that allow law like that to pass. I am a diehard conservative and usually vote a pure republican ballot so this hurts my heart to say. No matter what party the politician is in, if they believe in expanding imminent domain, vote against them! It is a given right to own land, which is the part of the "American Dream". I am not an environmentalist; I love my fossil fuel burning internal combustion engines. Why can't developers use land that has been previously developed and abandoned? If we do not stand up for our rights, we could end up like the people in Gaza, only people would die here on both sides. If you do not think it is headed there, just ask the people in Little Rock who lost land to build the Clinton Presidential porn collection and were not given fair market value for it.

I'm sure you would really wreak havoc against our military.

Unless you are being sarcastic.  An armed citizenry is the bedrock for protecting liberties and freedoms in society.  That is why the Nazis confiscated the arms from te Jews, Imperial Japan confiscated the weapons from its people, and the Soviets did the same to their people.  It makes it much easier to oppress a people that lack in protective equipment.  The Federalist papers deal with these issues.

I wont cut and past here but this link talks about the 28, 29, and 46th Federalist papers.

It also has some other interesting contributions if you would like to pursue them.

Our military could do no bere here against an armed citizenry than in Iraq, because:

  1. Many of our volunteers would not have the will to fight
  2. The military would not be getting many more volunteers
  3. The government  would start to lose funding to continue fighting

Armed citizens make total oppression costly.

handling tyranny in Africa?

if our citizens didn't have guns?

1.Would our volunteers then have the will to fight?

2.Would our military still be getting lots of volunteers?

3.So you think that our government would go broke fighting armed citizens?  Ummm ok.

Without guns, there would be no fight.

It's adding the guns that makes it a fight, instead of a one-sided exercise of power.

Interestingly, I am in agreement with the idea that the second amendment is intended to give private citizens the right to keep and bear arms, and that at least part of the motivation for that is to provide a check on the power of the state.

Regarding Israel, my understanding is that it's not that hard to get a license to own and carry firearms there, so I'm not sure the Gaza situation is a function of an unarmed citizenry.  Least of all the settlers.  I could be wrong, I'd be interested to hear from someone who knows.

Regarding the potential implications of a Gaza-style showdown here, no doubt our armed forces would make mincemeat of almost any conceivable civilian insurgency, however it's also hard to imagine them being anything other than horrified to do so.

Cheers -

There has not in modern history been a commitment to citizens rights so they are fighting an uphill battle out of a big hole...

So perhaps it is our respect for citizen's rights which protects us and not some guy with a Smith and Wesson?

I also doubt that armed American citizens would be willing to shoot American soldiers dead in the course of an operation similar to the Gaza withdrawal. I hope not, anyway.

I find it hilarious that the same liberals who steadfastly assure us that an armed citizenry could never hope to defeat a domestic tyrrany backed by the military simultaneously rant and rave and pound the sand about how the Iraqi insurgency has our military on the proverbial ropes.

Part of the respect of the citizenry is derived from the human right of defense of self and property.  And the respect is not perfect.  Ie. criminal actions effecting property and Eminent Domain actions by the states and national government.
