SC Politics: Ravenel Staying in the Game

Most self-financed candidates don't do a very good job of staying in the public eye after a failed campaign. Luckily, the exception to that rule is SC's Thomas Ravenel.

Ravenel funded his own campaign for GOP nomination - and when Rep. Jim DeMint edged him in the primary, Ravenel pulled off one of the classiest endorsements I've seen - writing a check to DeMint and putting a DeMint bumper sticker overtop his own - on his own car. ("If I knew as much as I do about Jim before the race - I wouldn't have run")

He followed up with a vigorous effort for DeMint that earned him a lot of goodwill around the state. Then, a few months later, he grabbed a little ink with a letter to Lindsey Graham (R-McCain), chastising the senior senator for his participation in the Gang of 14 coup. A good way to keep your name in the minds of GOP voters in the state.

Now Ravenel is back - this time with an op-ed at The State. This time, it's not a political move as much as an attempt to stake out some solid policy ground - supporting free market solutions to the state's Medicaid crisis. (Hat tip: SC Hotline)

It's good to see solid folks on the GOP bench - and Ravenel is definitely one to watch. So, to our readers: who's on the bench in your state? Tell us about them.

J.C. Watts is still waiting for the right moment to strike in OK.  I wish he had chosen the GOV race in 2006, but he did not.  No one thinks he is done with politics, but the question is when will he return.  The good money is now on the rumored-to-be-open Senate seat in 2008 (Inhofe's seat).

who's on the bench in your state?

One might note that there is a lot of praise, well earned, IMHO, for Gov. Sanford in Ravenel's op ed. I don't know what his plans are after he leaves office (in 2011, hopefully), but Sanford is one to keep an eye on, especially for fiscal conservatives.

Not that this is a news flash to anyone, but we have none - and are even a few short in the field.

Just because you asked.

Cheers.

I would say the best guy we have in Texas for future runs for higher office is Jeb Hensarling. I was hoping that Hutchison would retire in 06 to run for governor so that Jeb could run for Senate.
