In tomorrow's Washington Post.
JOHN G. ROBERTS JR. should be confirmed as chief justice of the United States. He is overwhelmingly well-qualified, possesses an unusually keen legal mind and practices a collegiality of the type an effective chief justice must have. He shows every sign of commitment to restraint and impartiality. Nominees of comparable quality have, after rigorous hearings, been confirmed nearly unanimously. We hope Judge Roberts will similarly be approved by a large bipartisan vote.
A lot of lefties will be burning their copies of the Post tomorrow and then marching off to torch John Philip Sousa's house.

And the Pope.
And Chuck Schumer for the secret deal with Karl Rove.
I agree 100%, I voted for Kerry and Gore simply because I dreaded George Bush picking the next justices of the Supreme Court and this is about as good as I could have hoped for, I hope he gets 90 votes.
Given that other Evan B. introduced Judge Roberts to the committee, that's at least two Democrats ready to let him pass.
I'm with Leon, though. Let Judge Roberts pass with no more than 60 votes, preferably less. Force the President to play hardball.
I have yet to see anything about Roberts that makes me think he shouldn't be on the Supreme Court and I voted for Kerry.
and I decided that it would be counterproductive to oppose him at this point. Really, he's the best the liberals on the WashPost can hope to get from this President.
I read the editorial, and they admit this:
Judge Roberts represents the best nominee liberals can reasonably expect from a conservative president who promised to appoint judges who shared his philosophy.
That's why they support him.
While Judge Roberts is not quite as conservative as I would have liked, I heartily accept him on the court.
It is clear he is a brilliant legal mind. I just want people on the court to make the right decisions according to the law, even if that decision is not in line with my political ideology.
It doesn't happen often, but I'm with you, WaPo!
of what a loyal opposition looks like.
My respect for her has risen dramatically.
And a patriot. At least on this topic. What a rare combination.
Roberts is a middle-of-the-roader. Had Bush actually nominated someone like Scalia and Thomas, as he promised repeatedly in his campaigns, the Washington Post would not be endorsing him.
Do those Democrat senetors on the judicial commitiee realize just how utterly pathetic and stupid they they where percieved by the american people
I guess after you've ben made a fool of the decent thing to do is vote for Roberts. It will be interesting to see how Wino Kennedy votes,or how he's told to vote by his under thirty Harvard School of Government attendants.

or, pass me the lithium, please. First Donna Brazile and now this.
