March Madness Open Thread

This would have been up earlier, but we've all been too busy watching ourselves.

Since Tennessee was the most undeserving 2 seed in history, does this make their potential defeat the least shocking in history?

Update [2006-3-17 7:45:0 by Blanton]: Let's just keep this thread going instead of doing a new one. SEC v. ACC, that's all I'm interested in. And I'm an SEC guy, but I love Duke.

The number 2 seed was amazing and very much undeserving of a team that has not played good basketball for over a month.  That said....GO VOLS!!! Tied at 56 w/8:58 to play

Win.

And then we can raise rabbits.

I had you going to the sweet sixteen. I hate you Oklahoma-you are going to be registered with Marquette as teams that fail me in the pool every year. Oh yeah-and go FIGHTING ILLINI!

That's all I have to say.

And not too many (3 of 21) had Montana.  I, however, was one of those three.

But, I had Seton Hall going to the Sweet 16.  Bummer.

Boston College really scared me. I have them going to the Final Four on all but one of my 5 brackets. But then again...all of my brackets are virtually identical. The Villanova over Boston College is the only pick that I altered with Villanova going to the Final Four over Boston College.

But...I have my Longhorns winning it all, so...it's not like any of my brackets really stand a chance unless the Horns pull it together for this tournament. LOL

The thing I love about this Texas Longhorn team is that rarely is it a nailbiter. They usually either win handily or get blown out. Much easier on my nerves that way - even if it makes my stomach sick. LOL

Same for me.  And I had Nevada in the Elite Eight!

Got Wisconsin-Milwaukee, though.

Nevada and Seton Hall? I had them both winning this round but losing next. So...I'm good. :-)

WE SHOULD HAVE HAD A REDSTATE POOL ON ESPN.COM!! WHY DIDN'T WE THINK OF THAT!? Or did I just miss it?

I took them to the Final Four as well, and my boss has BC winning the whole thing.  He was not enjoying things today, as I was gleefully reminding him that he had put BC as the national champion . . .

Nevada to the Elite Eight???  Pray, tell . . . what were you smoking when you filled out your bracket? ;)

I am not convinced they will make it past tomorrow's game, much less the weekend, but this has definitely not been their year.

Once Kentucky is gone I will be rooting for anybody but Duke.

But that kills too many hairs--and I'm at the stage of MPB where I can use all I can get.

Great to see another Illinois fan on here!  Let's set our sights on UConn in the Sweet 16!

I'm excited about Texas and Arkansas signing a home and home series each year over the next few years. Wish the Big XII would kick Baylor out and invite Arkansas in. That way Texas would have all of its old rivals in one conference.

I'm young, but I come from generations of Longhorns. I know my father and grandfather miss hating on those Hogs every year :-)

would love to be back in the Big 12 with Texas.  Being in the SEC has never felt right and it is a royal pain in the a** as a fan.

Besides, Dallas is half populated with hawg grads anyway.

...about Tennessee's bright orange. But don't say a word about Texas Burnt Orange!

I promise you - all the frat boys and sorority girls look hawt in their burnt orange shirts and khaki shorts. :-)

...at the game at Royal-Memorial Stadium a couple years ago where y'all beat us in Austin, and I saw the one in Fayettville on television.

Looked like there was very little lost animosity between the two schools over the drought between playing each other. LOL

Even though we lost, it was such a fun game. And with all of the pansies we play in the pre-season (Ohio State being the notable exception), it's fun to have another big rival on the schedule to look forward to.

More perilous to a win-loss record? Yes. But isn't that the fun of skydiving? The rush is so worth it! :-)

The orange on OSU's uniforms is also very ugly. (Former resident of Norman, OK, current Vanderbilt student. What can I say? Orange is just plain ugly.)

Is this about the Syracuse Orange?

I am just plain indifferent. Except that I have picked Texas A&M to defeat them in my bracket, so for the nonce I'm opposed to that Orange, too.

Why can't they just have orange-orange?  Why does it have to be that disgusting sherbert color?  I wish it were possible to vote teams out of the SEC...

Arkansas will stay right where it is in the SEC.  It's almost as consistent a win for Alabama as teams from Mississippi.

And, waay back in '03, my wife picked them to win it all.  I laughed at her when she handed me her sheet, saying, "Syracuse???  What the (expletive deleted) are you picking Syracuse for???"

Three weeks later, I sat stunned as Kansas missed the last-second shot to give Syracuse the national championship.  My wife reminded me that she had picked Syracuse on the average of once an hour, every hour, for the next week.  Served me right, too.

Basically, it stemmed from my belief that Villanova is being wildly overrated by everyone.

Not much you can say about Vanderbilt's athletic programs so go ahead and slam on other teams colors...it's all you have left to do.

Gloating on the Big East sucking because the three worst of their eight teams lost (look at the WHOLE season. Georgetown was significantly more accomplished than the Cuse, and were moderately better off than Marquette after beating them at MSG.). Also, saying "Ooooh, GW won, they should have been a higher seed." I think everyone that watched the game tonight saw why GW was an 8 seed. They needed a mediocre team from a mediocre conference to go cold to get back in the game. Duke'll probably smoke them on Saturday, and rightfully so.

The Blue Devils didn't look real impressive themselves.

I don't think this is one of Krzyzewski's best teams. But if Reddick shoots well, they can win.

Kind of the whole point of gloating is that the Big East was supposed to be this super conference, and they've already suffered two upsets. So, they deserve it.

Plus, my incompetent Commodores waxed G-Town on their home floor, so I'm not all that impressed.

Also, saying "Ooooh, GW won, they should have been a higher seed." I think everyone that watched the game tonight saw why GW was an 8 seed.

Yeah, I suppose watching the Tennessee/Winthrop game, you could say that Tennessee deserved a 14 seed, right?

Duke'll probably smoke them on Saturday, and rightfully so.

Kind of the whole point of deserving a higher seed is that you shouldn't have to play Duke in the second round.

It's Bruce Pearl.

Illinois in 6.

I've got UCONN winning it all, but would gladly tear up my bracket to see Dee Brown & Co. take them down.

Redick: 29

Williams: 29

McRoberts: 8

Everyone else: 0-9 from the floor, 4 points

I'm one of the few non-alums who roots for Duke (even though they turned me down six years ago).  But these guys look like they're in real trouble.

overrated (clap clap, clap clap) overrated (clap clap, clap clap) overrated (clap clap, clap clap)

If there is any real travesty to this tournament, it is Seton Hall's ticket to dance what with a 59 RPI, a 53-point loss to Duke, and losses to Richmond, Rutgers, Northwestern, and who barely escaped Marist, and South Florida (twice).  (See also Marquette, with losses to Winthrop, Nebraska, Rutgers, and Louisville).

The selection committee should apologize to Missouri State, and the many commentators who were outraged -- outraged -- that Cincy didn't get a dance ticket should be boiled in hot oil.

The Big East has two teams that could win it all (UConn, Nova), two legit sweet 16 teams (G-town, WVA), one team that loaded up on a cupcake non-conference schedule, then did nothing until its conference tourney (Pitt), and a bunch of mediocrities who capitalized on the inconsistencies of the top teams.  And some truly abysmal teams at the bottom (eg S. Fla., barely a mid-major team).

Like Tennessee, Auburn, and Florida. As a Georgia fan, surrounded by UT, AU, UF, and Clemson, orange is one of my most hated colors!

Seton Hall had no business being in this tournament, but Cincinnati has every right to complain.  Line up Seton Hall against Cincy, and and you take the Bearcats, not the Pirates.  It's completely outrageous that it went the other way.

Air Force, Utah State, and Seton Hall should have been out; Michigan, Hofstra, and Cincinnati should have been in.  Missouri State's overall RPI number is impressive, but they have a serious lack of quality wins.

This is the flaw in RPI:

Team A plays two 10-0 teams, two 9-1 teams, and one 1-9 team and goes 3-2.

Team B plays five 6-4 teams and goes 3-2.

Team B has the better RPI by a small margin, but I would take Team A and I don't think it's close.

That's basically how Missouri State had such an elevated number, but it's only impressive on the surface.  They avoided playing any awful teams, but they didn't play really good ones, either.

performed better in the ACC tournament, but were JJ-and-Shelden-watching again yesterday. Not to mention Paulus' insistence on an assist-to-turnover ratio as close to 1 as possible. We've gone out in the Sweet 16 3 of the past 4 years. At this rate, we may not even get that far.

Cincy is the classic example of what I'm talking about in the Big East.  They have wins over West Virginia and Syracuse, but that's about it.  The way this tourney is going, you can color me unimpressed with wins over those teams.  Throw in some rather thorough drubbings by the truly good teams in the conference (20 points at Pitt, 19 points at Georgetown, 19 points at UConn), and I'm not shedding great briney tears that they were left out.

I have the Longhorns beating them 72-70 in the finals. :-)

The Longhorns have a good track record against the Huskies in the tournament, I think.

#2 seed Ohio State was down 4 at the half to a team in their own back yard (Dayton is about an hour's drive from Columbus), #3 seed Iowa loses to Northwestern State, and #9 seed Wisconsin gets blown out by Arizona.

Feh.

I guess I'm supposed to hate Auburn, but I basically root for them in every game except one.  I think Tennessee is slowly evolving into Alabama's bigger rival then Auburn.  Every Alabama fan has lots of friends who are Auburn fans, but are likely to attack Vols on sight.

I have never voted for a Dem in my life, but this really ticks me off.  I have always injoyed having a little action on the tourney.  The bill will ban Debit/Credit card companys and Western Union type companys from transmitting transactions to off shore gambling sites.  An estimated 8 million Americans gamble off shore. Does the GOP really have 8 million voters to spare this year?  I can tell you I wont be voting for my rep( bill cosponser Mark Kirk).  They somehow are able to handle legal gambling in Europe, be we here in the states aparentlly cant handle it(Unless were are betting on the stock market or playing lotto).  I would rather gamble with a regulated company here in the states, but that might offend somebody.  Who the heck is anyone to tell me who I spend my money ?  Mabe Congress should work on getting their own economic house in order before they start telling me what I can and cannot do with my money.  Next up there gonna try and make Internet  providers ban internet sites thant offer off shore gambling. Are we living in the USA or the USSR ?

we attack when we first smell them :)

You racist s.o.b.

Figures.  You are DEAD to me.  DEAD!

Ok, they lost two games when they were the higher seed. That completely disregards my point which was the three worst teams in the Big East played yesterday and lost.

Today the fourth and fifth team in the league, WVU and Gtown won, as did number two, Nova. UConn will win tonight, and if Pitt handles Kent State, the Big East will move to 5-3 in the first round.

Chances are WVU, Nova and UConn will all find themselves in the sweet sixteen. G'town and Pitt both have a shot at it.

I hope you enjoyed your gloating yesterday because chances are that will be your last chance this month to think the Big East is a failure.

I admit I am an anyone but Duke kind of girl.  I haven't like Duke for years=the only time I ever rooted for Duke was when the beat UNLV in the championship game back in the 90's.

Before this game, I figured that the UAlbany/UConn game would be a dogfight in mascots only . . . Great Danes v. Huskies.  Less than 11:40 to go, 2nd half . . . Albany by 12.

and missed most everything else! But I have never been wrong on a presidential election...

http://www.redstate.com/story/2006/3/16/113843/631

The Danes gave UConn a heck of a run. Seeing a 16 topple a 1 would bring a smile to my face. Especially if that 1 happened to be the hated UConn Huskies.

That being said, big win for Pitt tonight. Looks like the hating on major conferences ought to switch to the Big Ten from the Big East. Tough day for the number one RPI conference in the country. Oh, and the Big East's top five represented today.

And 5-0 tonight for the Big East.

I've got a feeling that we'll be seeing the Great Danes win the America East again next year, which would put them into the NCAAs again.

I was also dissapointed by our performance this year, but we are a young team so hopefully we can improve.

They lost by 30 in the finals.

They beat UNLV in the Final Four, then beat KU in the finals.

USSR for the gold medal, but to get to that round, but everyone sort of forgets that.

Still don't like Duke though.

Kentucky won last night, but if they survive on Sunday I will be shocked.

Go GATORS !!! We love the Gators here in Jax. Sorry about that "surrounded by orange" feeling you have. Acupuncture takes care of that for three easy payments of $29.95. Take it easy dawg.

The yell that wins the day

Is the 'HOYA, HOYA SAXA!'

Of the dear old Blue and Gray.

HOYA! SAXA!

HOYA! SAXA!

HOYA! SAXA!

Orange is ugly...I am glad they lost because now I can listen to Michael Savage on my radio station again instead of sports radio.
