Lucia Newman leaves CNN

CNN's Havana correspondent, Lucia Newman, is quitting the network founded by the drunken Ted Turner. In what is a major coup in the battle for cable news dominance, Newman is leaving CNN to work for Al-Jazeera in their Buenos Aires bureau. No kidding.

According to the AP piece linked above:

As yet, no U.S.-based cable or satellite company has said it will carry Al-Jazeera International. With limited space available, it's often difficult for new networks to get substantial carriage commitments — even those without potential political baggage.

So this will be a step down for Newman, from CNN-level to somewhere in the MSNBC range. And she'll have to alter her mindset from "Capitalism is Evil" to "Death to America," but Keith Olbermann made a similar mental switch a few years back. (In fact, his might have been even more drastic, as he went from sportscasting to… whatever he's doing now.)

Best of Luck, Lucia. I hope you enjoy your new digs. Dictators everywhere fawn for your blind eye to their abuses and your subtle anti-American biases. Fidel will miss you, to be sure, but I'm sure he'll send flowers.

will not be sorely missed :-)

MSM reporters were, by and large, a soulless bunch with no morals, principles, or human compassion, but this is extreme even for that sorry bunch.

I find it interesting that they didn't send her straight to Caracas.

Not much of a difference anyway and at least we would get rid of the increasingly plump Katie Couric.

but I think it would be great if Al Jazeera was broadcast in the US.

the States.  I wouldn't watch it myself, but if they could cable companies willing to give it bandwidth and advertisers willing to be identified with it, let it air.

A caveat: I said the same thing about Air America.

On general principle, or is there something specific about them that appeals?
