Whither McCain?

The other day, Brad Smith wondered if Senator McCain would support the Online Freedom of Speech Act. McCain has previously stated that he thinks the internet should be out of reach for campaign finance laws.

Well, RedState might have found out why Senator McCain is silent about this bill affecting the internet. From a Fortune Magazine interview, John McCain has this to say:

I read my e-mails, but I don't write any. I'm a Neanderthal -- I don't even type. I do have the rudimentary capability of calling up some Web sites, like the New York Times online, that sort of stuff. No laptop. No PalmPilot. I prefer my schedule on notecards, which I keep in my jacket pocket.

But my wife has enormous capability. Whenever I want something I ask her to do it. She's just a wizard. She even does my boarding passes -- people can do that now. When we go to the movies, she gets the tickets ahead of time. It's incredible.

Senator, I'm available for a tutorial.

I wait with baited breath for the press to find this anything but eccentrically charming.  It's not that I object to McCain not being a techie, but a couple of weeks ago when it was revealed that Chertoff and Rumsfeld don't use email for professional communications (in my opinion for obvious liability reasons) you would have thought they were about to be shipped off to the Museum of Natural History to join the dinosaur exhibits.

Ignorance of technology is not a good way to innoculate yourself against the age issue.

Unless he's engaged in brilliant, complex, symbolic political theater with a touch of humor in an "unfrozen caveman lawyer" or comedia d'el arte sort of way.

Hmmm. How about:

In the comedia d'el arte that is Washington  politics these days, McCain is the capitano:

This braggart captain boasts about his military and romantic conquests--tales that are never true. He is full of gusto when winning, but a whining, cowardly child when losing. He is bold, arrogant, swaggering, egocentric. He loves to bully people, but in reality, his boldness is a façade that hides a piteous coward who runs from battle. He craves attention, wanting to be seen and admired at all times.

The coward part is wrong, but otherwise, not a bad description -- and it's not kabuki!

While I find the Senator's lack of technical expertise a bit alarming, there are plenty of other Americans his age that are scared to death of a PC.   I guess that's why our tax dollars pay for his staff.

But to imply that he's incapable making an informed decision regarding First Amendment rights because of the electronic medium is a bit over the top.

I understand that President Bush also never emails.  It's not that uncommon in the over 60 crowd.

Some call the technologically lacking out of touch.  I call them financial security.  Except I usually don't charge people as old as McCain.

Personally, It is a bit alarming that they work on so many bills on subjects they have no working knowledge of.  But then again, if they even bother to read it, it's an improvement.

Bush, Rumsfeld, Cheney, etc. are on record as having been email users prior to assuming office and stopped for liability reasons -- emails might be subject to search or FOIA requests.

the medium, how can you possibly act intelligently towards it? This guy shouldn't be considered for president of anything past a homeowners association in Sun City.

I love it.  I'm stealing it.

Wonderful commentary however I disagree about the cowardly part.  I am not saying that McCain is necessarily a coward.  However, in the context of your quotation, I believe the comment is accurate.  Go back to the 2000 POTUS primaries.  When he announced and was the darling of the media, he was full of gusto.  After South Carolina, he indeed acted the whining, cowardly child.  I've seen McCain temper tantrums & he looks much like either of my now adult children when they were toddlers.  Except they were cute.

If he was a master of the electronic realm he might be more likely to pile on the restrictions, not less. After all, we know he is a master of the television appearance and just look at what he has done there.

from Roger L. Simon when he used "capitano the braggart soldier" to describe John Kerry during the height of the Swift Boat brouhaha.

The capitano character fits Kerry much better -- especially the braggart part -- while McCain brings to mind strawberries and ball bearings.

Well, I'm pretty well done for the day.  I'll be wandering around chuckling with the picture of McCain sitting the "Bogart chair".

I'm more resolved than ever to never vote for McCain for anything, for any reason.

could call up the First Amendment online for him. That's something else with which he seems to be completely unfamiliar.
