The Fidel is finally dead rumor has fired up today. We've been hearing it for the last little while too. A news organization in Miami is working the story, but the Miami area congressmen are discounting this as rumor for now.
Oh, would that it were so.
Update [2006-7-11 14:19:7 by Moe Lane]: A prediction: Cuban-American relations will be effectively normalized within 48 hours of the verification of Fidel Castro's death. 72 if it happens on a weekend.
For Hate's sake I spit my last Update at thee... KHAAAAAAAANNNNNN!!!!! [2006-7-11 15:51:37 by Moe Lane]: It's quiet. Too quiet. Even a small press event would settle this... no, wait, he's actually a Cuban CIA agent named Igor Davidovich Martinez, so a public appearance would actually prove nothing.

The Clash, White Man in Hammersmith Palais:
All over people changing their votes
Along with their overcoats
If Adolf Hitler flew in today
They'd send a limousine anyway
I root for the day when Castro rests aside Che.
But Charlie Rangel will mourn. (Scroll down.)
I'll have to try it. Unfortunately im having problems breaking in my damn humidor, its too humid. It doesn't help that the humidity is naturally around 78-80% either. So i dont want to order any new cigars till i get the thing under control.
particularly when I read Castro might be dead.
From what i gather most people seem to have their cigars in around 65-70%? Will 78-80% cause mold or anything like that?
to keep power a few weeks or months, but things probably will get bloody very quickly. Like you I don't expect the Cuban military to allow any immediate uprising to go unanswered, and initial change will come from within its ranks. But it will come.
Do we even think that they'd want to consider their leaders to be mortal? Case in point: Kim Jong Il in North Korea. Castro isn't much better and having already set in motion successor states in Venezuela and (possibly) Nicaragua (if Ortega gets his wish and weasels back into power). We're going to be dealing with Stalinist ghosts and their ghoulish followers for decades to come.
There are much better cigars out there.
This is one of them
My local shop was charging about 12 bucks for a stick of something that i found for roughly 5 bucks stick when i bought a box.
in San Francisco.
Wait, it's full of what.......?
of stogies here. bein in FL makes it easier than most places to get cubans. I was a regular arturo fuente smoker for the longest til my local cigar tore owner gave me a La Gloria to try and I haven't looked back.
Online sales are much, much cheaper nowadays. Local stores can charge 8-10 bucks per stick, even by the box. I get mine online for about $5.
They're VERY full flavored though, so be warned. On a scale of 10 for robustness they rate about an 8 or 9!!
78%-80% is good by me and TBH the small humidor I have doesnt keep my cigars the way i like em so i use a small sponge in an open ziplock. ya its kinda ghetto but it works great.
but if the castro regime were going to fall apart, it would have already. look at all the suffering there--plenty of reason to challenge this guy and yet he's survived everything from bay of pigs to the present.
i bet raul takes over and we're stuck with him till he dies (which could also be soon), or until things down there get very bloody.
sorry to share such a pessimistic view, but it's the view i consider most likely to play out IRL.
what about raul? he would likely take the reins, no?
I think if it turns out that Cuba's regime falls apart without Fidel Castro, then Moe will be right.
Most folks say 68-72% is the desired range, with 70% being your target. But I found that my cigars always seem too dry for my tastes and higher humidities take care of that. Besides, my cigars dont stay in the humidor long enough to cause a problem. It's very small and can hold maybe 25-30 cigars. Just big enough for a box of La Gloria's!! I wouldn't reccomend those ranges for long term storage Though. It really can cause mold.
Also recall that there are 2 kinds of mold that a cigar can get. One is a light gray or white powder thats called plume. The other kind of mold is this gross looking, greenish blue gunk. You'll know it's bad when you see it. :)

The one time I got my hands on some, it was about two months into my wife's first pregnancy...
Seven months later, this cigar novice had completely ruined the experience by not storing them properly... Eh, I gave one to the OB anyway ;)
