The Money Race: GOP Incumbents vs. Dem Challengers
By young pundit Posted in User Blogs — Comments (18) / Email this page » / Leave a comment »
From the diaries . . .
Here is how the money race is stacking up for this 2006 election cycle's 7 most competitive Senate races: Arizona, Missouri, Montana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Virginia
Overall Funds
GOP Incumbents 40.3 Million
Dem Challengers 16.1 Million
-------Some Specific States------
Arizona
Kyl--7.0 Million
Pederson--1.7 Million
Montana
Burns--2.2 Million
Tester--500,000
Ohio
DeWine--6.6 Million
Brown--3.7 Million
Pennsylvania
Santorum--9.4 Million
Casey Jr.--5.2 Million
Virginia
Allen--6.6 Million
Webb--400,000
This is obviously a huge funding gap that the Democrats will have to try and overcome by using resources from their campaign committee. Although I don't know if a 24.2 Million dollar shortfall will be something that they can make up so easily. Based on a funding perspective, it looks like these Senate Republicans are poised to hold their seats as incumbents this fall.
I love the research. Any chance we get to see the open seats or the flip side (D incumbents). I'm interested in MN, MD, NJ, TN, WA, and MI especially.
The Green Papers has great info about midterm elections here.
I pulled the numbers from various sources but will be working on finding links with some comprehensive data. The FEC numbers for this quarter were just reported so I'm still looking for media coverage. Bear with me and I'll have something up ASAP.
(or less up to date perhaps???) than your numbers:
Pennsylvania
Santorum - $14.5 million
Casey - $8.4 million
Virginia
Allen - $10.4 million
Webb - $1.1 million
Arizona
Kyl - $7.6 million
Pederson - $3.9 million
Ohio
DeWine - $5.6 million
Brown - $3.7 million
Montana
Burns - $4.9 million
Tester - $.85 million
Here are some of the D seats asked about:
Minnesota
Kennedy - $5.1 million
Klobuchar - $3.7 million
Maryland
Cardin - $3.9 million
Steele - $2.7 million
Mfume - $.62 million
New Jersey
Menendez - $7.2 million
Kean, Jr. - $3.0 million
Tennessee
Ford - $4.5 million
Corker - $3.5 million
Van Hilleary - $1.8 million
Bryant - $1.8 million
Washington
Cantwell - $8.6 million
McGavick - $2.7 million
Michigan
Stabenow - $6.0 million
Butler - $2.2 million
Bouchard - $1.4 million
Hope that helps!
Raising cash for the one issue very important to his supporters in San Francisco and the leftwing blogosphere. Feel free to guess what that issue is, and it doesn't start with a "I".
In Tennessee as soon as the dust settles between the three R's, look for money to pour into the R nominee's coffers. Ford will scramble to keep up out-of-state, but Republicans are holding their wallets until the dust clears b/w Corker, Bryant & Hilleary. Don't want to bet on the wrong horse just yet.
but here is the date from the absurdly expensive Hotline. Parse it at your leisure:

Sorry for the lack of formatting, I can't right now. But if someone else would like to, I'd be qutie appreciative.
you have to change the state initials manually in the url (eg MD to MN), as well as changing between 1 and 2 to get the right race.
YOu can also get congressional races by changing the last four, eg from MDS1 to AZ08, AZ07, etc.
I remember reading somewhere yesterday (and someone please correct and/or elaborate if I get this wrong) that the DNC has pledged $12 million to candidates, but only has $10 million in its purse at the moment. Will be interesting to see how that pans out.
I tend to hold off on my contributions till the primaries are over (for multiple reasons).
The numbers I posted above are those with the 2Q reports which are almost all in now. Note for example, the MD SEN race.

Steele (R) 1,899,271 598,270 3,039,132
Compared to the Open Secrets site which only has updated information for Cardin. The other candidates are showing a latest update of 3/31/06 which was the end of Q1. It's a great site, but it is not the place for the quickest posting of data.
While I'm on it, note that in MD the primary is helping Steele a lot. He now has a CoH advantage on Cardin. Cardin spent $300,000 more than he raised in Q2 while Steele added 1.3 million to his CoH. Further, note that if Mfume wins the primary the money differential is enough that Steele will be able to advertise without much push-back.
It is great that the good guys are doing so well on the campaign finance. But let us be ever mindful that these funds are required to buy media and advertising exposure. The Democrat candidates and causes get non-stop free coverage -- as well as a host of other free services:
- negative opposition research against Republicans.
- fake scandals cooked up, passed around, hyped up, and served continually in all the national papers and TV news, even long after they are thoroughly discredited.
- non-stop carping about the current administration.
- fictional news about how bad the economy is doing in GOP hands.
- heavy coverage of the homeless, who magically exist only during GOP administrations.
- fiction-filled push polls conducted, misrepresented, and front-paged.
- Democrat scandals minimized or simply ignored. Same-day service provided to generate fake GOP scandals to push the Dem scandals out of the news.
- Continual body count news from Iraq, nothing whatsoever on progress.
None of the above is new or surprising. I just want to say that we are doing a great job on campaign funding. But we must not grow complacent.
Aside from Tennessee, it sends a pretty clear message about the Republicans whose stats are unavailable.
I sooo have my fingers crossed for Mfume. That said, I have a hard time seeing how he gets to 50%. THAT said, his troops are probably more likely to GOTV for him.
Not all of us have access to the hotline stuff, and its good to know about the opensecrets site for after this thread gets buried in the archives. ;-)
...with some of the less interesting races not included, because this took a long time!

Whew! There you go!
Outside of Memphis and the Vanderbilt area in Nashville just waiting for a Bryant/Corker/or Hilleary bumper sticker. No one has one now out of fear of having to remove it and replace it with one of the other 3 come August.
Thanks for cleaning it up. I'd give you a 5 if I could. Oh wait, I think I still can... yes, I can. But I don't think it shows up on the screen. Well anyway, thanks of the effort.
