Even if you're Glenn Greenwald. Luckily, Ace of Spades has a spirited defense up of the man and the horrid thing done to him. It's a good thing that Ace is so noble about his defense. Don't you agree, Sock Puppet enaL eoM?
Sock Puppet enaL eoM: (falsetto) I couldn't agree more, Moe Lane! You're so clever!
Moe Lane: If that's true, it's only because of the trust and honor shown to me by independent readers such as yourself, Sock Puppet enaL eoM.
Sock Puppet enaL eoM: And modest, too!
Moe Lane: (Depreciating chuckle) Well... you said it, not me.
(Via OTB).
Update [2006-7-20 11:31:49 by Sock Puppet Me aLone*]: Greenwald responds! Says that it's all due to people in his household, and that the right wing's bad, bad, bad. So there, Moe Lane!
Moe Lane: Guess I had it all wrong, then.
Sock Puppet enaL eoM: Bad Moe Lane! Bad! No biscuit!
Sock Puppet Me aLone: You should apologize to all five - at last count - people living at Greenwald's place!
Moe Lane: Yeah, probably: especially since the party'll probably just get bigger, anyway. Just let me toss out this old razor first.
Sock Puppet enaL eoM: Wow, that is an old razor. Where'd you get it?
Moe Lane: Can't quite remember, but I think that it used to belong to this guy named Bill. Kind of useless in the blogosphere, though; half of it won't even let you carry it around openly...
*Thanks, blooch.

I'd guess his partner went on a rampage to defend GG's good name across the blogosphere, and has now gotten GG into more trouble. But obviously I don't know.
I wrote a post at OI to try and head off the inevitable wails of outrage. Sock puppets don't deserve privacy.
However it should be noted that identical IP addresses are insufficient proof. WHOIS records need also to be analysed, and if the allegation is against a dialup or cable modem user, then all bets are off.
I wonder if he dictated the comments to whoever was writing from his home IP, or if they met beforehand and agreed on the words and themes.
And who cares what he posts under his own name or someone else's on blogs that criticize him?
Whether it ought to be or not, when you defend yourself against an attack, your counterpoints are assumed to be suspect are more subject to criticism. If a different person defends you, unless discredited as a partisan or ringer, they gain some level of believability simply because they aren't you. When more than one person makes similar arguments, the argument gains more credence. By posting under multiple names, especially in the third person, in mulitple locations, you fraudulently increase your authority. Same argument as those against front groups.
One, that Ellison, Sam Mathews, Ryan, Wilson and Thomas Ellers all live at Glenn's address in Brazil and share his IP and all are disturbingly like-minded in comments at right-of-center blogs. Two, someone else in Glenn's household (his partner perhaps?) is doing the sock puppetry for Glenn (a case of sock puppetry by proxy!). Three, Glenn is lying. If he's not lying, then it's mostly likely alternative two, that Glenn's Brazilian partner is running interference for him.
Does Greenwald speak of the pompitous of love, or does our Maurice?
And what exactly is the pompitous of love anyway?
I guess this means my wife is really just me, pretending to support me, a mere sock puppet, and I never even realized it! I mean, we, like, have the same IP. The odds of that are totally like 10^12 to 1 against... pretty darn conclusive.
Or wait, am I the sock puppet and she's real? This is all so confusing. Someone please help!
Do you and she agree that you and/or she will post under several different names, using the same words and themes, across several blogs?
Just wondering.
that from what I can tell, the two of you don't agree about anything. :-) Or at the very least, you don't write about the things that you do agree about.
Also there's the fact that from my count, there have been four commenters who have been identified from that IP address leaving virtually identical comments praising GG across the blogosphere - I suppose it's possible that Glenn lives in a house with four other guys who independently sing the exact same praises about him, completely of their own volition; however, Occam's Razor would instead say, "sock puppet."
Senior Wences
Hand Puppet: HP - High voice
Box: Box with Pedro head inside - low voice
HP: S'awright?
Box: S'awright!
HP: S'ok?
Box: S'ok!
Hp: Do you love me?
Box: Very Much!
Or something like that.
and I choose to believe his explanation, but YMMV.
he seems to be saying that while he didn't do it, someone in his household did.
this Greenwald guy other than the rather bizarre things he says which other sites feature.
Having said that one cannot read his disclaimer and not think "it depends on the meaning of the word 'is'"
Not frequently, I leave comments at blogs which criticize or respond to something I have written. I always, in every single instance, use my own name when doing so. I have never left a single comment at any other blog using any name other than my own, at least not since I began blogging. IP addresses signify the Internet account one uses, not any one individual. Those in the same household have the same IP address. In response to the personal attacks that have been oozing forth these last couple of weeks, others have left comments responding to them and correcting the factual inaccuracies, as have I. In each case when I did, I have used my own name.
bass voice? Or even a baritone, for that matter?
Others call him the Gangster of Love.
I call him Mau...
Never mind.
I'm starting to wonder about who's behind some of the comments in this thread.
I still don't see why we care enough about him to even deride him, let alone worry about how he defends himself from said derision...
I have no idea if a Brazilian IP makes sense or not. Does anyone know if other (non-Greenwald related) comments from that IP have shown up before? If so, it may simply be a public anonymizer or proxy based in Brazil.
For anyone interested Glen Greenwald has written a post which refutes this and other claims made against him.
Your sock puppet's name, that is.
Glenn's Greenwald's real name is apparently Legion...
There is actually someone on RS with that name for an account. It made me laugh.
But he's earned his spot on the hot seat - by the way, you shouldn't feel obligated to join him; Greenwald's hardly your fault - so he gets to squirm.
Several reasons:
1) It's the principle of the thing. Allowing this to slide from a prominent blogger sends a message that it's a tolerable practice. If you want sock puppetry to become an acceptable and even more widespread practice, letting it slide when a prominent blogger does it is one way to accomplish that. On the other hand, making an example of anyone who does it raises the bar. It also makes it less likely that a conservative blogger will do it because the Left will be looking for any example of it on our side of the Ditch.
2) He's a d**-bag who made his bones ripping on conservatives and some are enjoying a bit of schadenfreude. It the same reason many on this and other sites enjoy ripping on "Screw `em" Kos or that creep who made rather disgusting comments about a 2-year old boy on Jeff Goldstein's blog. There's a certain satisfaction in watching a creep be brought down.
3) As his (or his boyfriend's) sock puppets reiterated, he's a prominent blogger whose blogging was cited by Russ Feingold (D-WI) on the floor the Senate. If the guy has credibility problems, taking him down hurts Feingold by implication or at least undermines whatever argument he was trying to make. Like it or not scalp-hunting is part of the political process and the other side isn't going to stop doing it if we let this slide.
... is awfully similar to "anal one".
A propos of nothing.
This Glen Greenwald guy?
And who cares what he posts under his own name or someone else's on blogs that criticize him?
nearly says that everytime he did it, he did it at least twice.

Mean absolutely nothing to me.
The 3rd reason you cited Should have been your leading idea because That's the only one that matters.
Take the punk down!
