John Dingell Will Not Condemn Hezbollah

Despite the United States listing Hezbollah as a terrorist organization and despite the fact that Hezbollah provoked the current confrontation with Israel by launching an unprovoked attack on Israel, Rep. John Dingell of Michigan, refuses to take a position on the whole affair. On a Sunday program in Detroit, Dingell said he would not take sides in the current Israeli - Hezbollah conflict, the host then sought to clarify, asking “so you’re not against Hezbollah?” Rep. Dingell replied with a resounding “no.”
Remember, should the Democrats take over the House of Representatives, Dingell would chair the Energy and Commerce Committee. Dingell is also one of only eight, count 'em, EIGHT, Democrats who did not chose to vote in favor of the recent House Resolution supporting Israel against terrorist aggression.
It's good to know terrorist groups have at least one supporter in the House. How many others are there and can we afford to find out by letting them take control of the House?
You can hear Dingell in his own words below:

until the Party leadership smacked him. Heck, I'd even settle for the Republicans smacking him.
Even though I'm old, I just can't hold my breath that long (as in forever) yet.
It's Dearborn, and the heavily arab city is in his district. Arabs are a tiny fraction of the electorate, though.
probably just part of his strategy for keeping his 50 year run in the House alive.
Which would explain three of those eight Representatives refusing to condemn Hizbullah coming from that region. As of the last census, Michigan is the only state where Muslims outnumber Jews, and it's by an overwhelming margin. In addition to the people of Arab descent in cities like Dearborn and Hamtramck (which used to be a predominantly Polish community until the past two decades or so), you also have large populations of black Muslims in Detroit itself. And, sadly, these areas are no strangers to terrorism-related investigations and arrests...
And his family and his...
Can't fault him for being afraid of the local chapters of the Hezbos.
But we Can and Should fault him for cowardice...
Furthermore, I wonder if Iran has a short list of favorite Dem's to court. Chavez was just honored in Iran, maybe Dingell got jealous.
are Muslims. They aren't, although many estimates of Muslims in America do make that mistake. Yes, there are plenty of Muslims in the Detroit area, but you will also find lots and lots of Marionite Christians, Antiochean Orthodox, Chaldean Catholics, Syriac Christians and Copts.
who purposefully misrepresent how many of them are in fact Muslim. As I understand it, there ought to be a large fraction that are Christians because of when the families immigrated originally.
All that's left is to tie him to Oil for Food...
I live not far from there and have met numerous Arab Muslims in my passings. In my experience, about 4/5 of them are gracious, honest, hard working, intelligent people.
The remaining 1/5 of them tend to be reclusive and don't want to speak one word to you other than what's required, even if you're buying their products or are very friendly to them. It's that 1/5 that scare me...
they can convince me they are human beings, not cowards hiding behind civilians and importantly "MEN". Then I may possibly hear their grievances. Otherwise I wish the IDF good hunting and may they squash these cockroaches.
I've been to Dearborn, and have frequented Arab-run businesses there... there are some really, really friendly people there. But there are that bloc that just plain old scares the tar out of you, and they do give the rest a bad name...
...with footage of over 200 dead U.S. Marines in Beirut, reminding Americans that Hezbollah claimed credit for murdering our men.
As they did when they blew up the U.S. Air Force barracks in Reyaud.
And when they hijacked that TWA flight.
Bush oughtta be asking the Israelis, "How can we help?"
It only takes one suicide bomber carrying a nuclear bomb to ruin your whole day.
But the truth is I can't. Some of our elected politicians seem to hate our country so much, there is no level to which they will not stoop. They will of course deny this when confronted with it and begin to rant about their patriotism.
Unless the Michigan state government discontinues its pro-union/anti-business environment quickly, Michigan is on pace to lose a House Seat in 2010 and in 2020. The large Arab presense there will become more and more diluted as house seats are lost over time.
Dingell may be afraid of losing his seat in 2006 only to have his seat eliminated in 2010.
Who are you gonna believe, ThinkProgress or your lying ears? (YouTube rocks. That is all.)
When you start slicing and dicing people's quotes, the results can be peculiar.
So he condemns Hezbollah, but doesn't take sides.
Gotcha.
regardless of whether he takes sides or not, he does in fact condemn Hizbollah. Though it seemed clear to my lying ears that he was not taking sides between Israel and Lebanon, which of course the latter you are free to equate to Hizb. if you like but suffice it to say that thats a point of debate. Regardless, the story headline as posted is false.
Focused on this:
DINGELL: Well, we don't, first of all, I don't take sides for or against Hezbollah or for or against Israel.
ANCHOR: You're not against Hezbollah?
DINGELL: No, I happen to be -- I happen to be against violence, I think the United States has to bring resolution to this matter. Now, I condemn Hezbollah as does everybody else, for the violence, but I think if we've got to talk to them and if we don't -- if we don't get ourselves in a position where we can talk to both sides and bring both sides together, the killing and the blood let is going to continue.
My English major eyes lead me to conclude that the sentence about taking sides is explicit in the sides not being taken; and then, for bonus points, he reaffirms it in the first word in response to the follow-up question.
But he condemns them.
Oh, sure, they're nasty and vicious for doing something (God alone knows what), but Israel is probably just as bad. No, wait; that last adverb was pointless, right?
The title is not literally correct. It's correct in every sense that counts, though.
Dingell actually says the exact opposite of what the title of this post says, but it's "correct" in "every sense that counts" in that it would sure be convenient for folks who wanted to paint Dingell as an extremist if the title of this post were correct (in the more traditional "literal" sense of course).
I'd say words failed me, but they already failed you.
It's only correct "in every sense that counts" in that he condemns Hezbollah for some vague reason, but lacks the simple humanity to side with the civilized humans against the savages.
So, in other words, he's all about pro forma condemnation, and ritually opposed to condemnation that means anything.
Other than being almost completely wrong, you're right.
If you don't condemn Hezbollah for just being Hezbollah and everything they stand for, condemnation of their "violence" is meaningless.
machine Democrat. He's straight out of a Harold Robbins novel, whether Robbins specifically created any politicians or not.
he's in favor of apple pie and baseball, though.

that Chuch Schumer will walk out of any presentation involving Dingell?
