Redstate is hearing from congressional sources that it has become apparent that the statement yesterday came after the surgery. This may indicate that Castro is in grave condition or is already dead.
More as it develops.

...since he thinks he's great a military hero.
After all, they named that street in San Francisco after him.
Wait, it's full of what....?
And where's the photo op of a smiling Eliàn Gonzalez at Castro's bedside?
Too soon?
will miss him dearly judging from photos like these:
Any chances that the Communist Control of Cuba will die with him? Or can we expect the same from his brother who is likely to suceed him?
you should expect more of the same from his brother. However, the brother is not the iron fist Fidel has been. My guess is he gets tossed into the sea in "fairly" short order - months or a year or two.
The brother is 75 and there is no bench behind him.
Is his half brother and is deeply hated and feared in Cuba. He is known to be a sexual predator, a cold blooded killer, and very corrupt.
He and Che murdered thousands of dissidents and resistors of the revolution. Things are likely to get rougher in Cuba before they get better.
Rush just mentioned us on air on the Castro issue. Redstate.com once again paving the way.
he also complained that it took him a week to find Redstate.com when it switched over from Redstate.org.
Hopefully we will go on a diplomatic offensive once Castro moves on, whether his brother is able to maintain control or not. We should offer large trade + aid, plus normal relations, if Cuba opens up the economy and has democratic elections. Great opportunity to get Cuba off Team Evil and back on the right track.
Something I picked up on a cigar website(!) with ties to the Cuban exile community:
Raul Castro has taken on a more visible role in public in recent weeks, but indicated in June that a collective leadership would probably govern post-Castro Cuba. Only the Communist Party can succeed his brother, he said. “That’s the way it will be,” he said. “The rest is pure speculation.”
Here's the link to the full article on CigarEnvy.com, which is also reporting that a Miami Cuban radio station is quoting someone who saw the paper turning power over to Raul---and that not only was it written after the surgery, but that the signature on the paper doesn't match Fidel's writing.
Scuttlebutt from the Cuban exile community is that he's either dead or in a coma.
Another cigar lover!
Can't wait for a chance to get the rightful owners back into control of the Cuban plantations and, after a few years, sample some world-class cigars.
Note the following also in the same article: "Many Cuba analysts say that Raúl Castro lacks the political skill, the health or even the ambition to succeed his brother and lead Cuba's economically crippled one-party state. Some see him serving as a brief transitional figure who would open up Cuba, a mediator for a "softer" communism or a figurehead for a younger collective leadership."
Brief transitional figure for sure. I don't think Raul is going to last too long, and maybe he knows it and that's why he is talking rule-by-committee.
From what I read a few weeks ago, President Bush put Condi and Commerce Secretary Gutierrez (Cuban expatriate) to work in 2003 on a commission to work out how to bring about democracy in Cuba after Castro is gone. Their recommendation was leaked and is basically to funnel $80 Million into the country when Castro dies and prevent Raul from consolidating power.
The thought is that Chavez is a little too chummy with Castro and we need to cut him off at the knees.
Was listening to Fox and just heard them report that the administration is saying that "when" Castro dies--sounds like they think he's dead too--the people of Cuba will want to choose their own leader and not have one forced on them.
They were saying that the U.S. might be willing to help out the Cuban economy up to $80 Million dollars if they want help. Interesting coincidence :-)
Sounds like it isn't going to come as a surprise to the Cuban community in Florida.
We can't keep even a lousy $80 million secret and there are people out there who think the people within the US government helped assassinate JFK.
I could never understand the conspiracy buffs. Forget the conspiracies themselves, the buffs seem to gloss over the fact that nobody keeps secrets anymore.
By the way, Drudge is linking to an AP story that quotes Bush talking about the 80 Million for "aid" to Cuba, and the commission that the article at Cigar Envy talked about, but it carefully doesn't talk about the money being used to fund an opposition government. :-)
I wonder how many Cuban exiles in Miami are preparing to have a talk with Raul about his plans for Cuba after Fidel?
You were talking about Cuban baseball.... Right?
The sex thing has wilted. So now he just has Castro's Billion to spend.
The Cigar Revolution awaits.
Cialis. Another word: he is a pervert, and is not after normal relief.
The Communist Party can succeed Fidel only if Chavez starts sending a lot more money to Cuba.
Otherwise, from what I read and hear,Cubans are sick of socialism, and when Fidel goes, that's the end of it in Cuba.
Fidel has been trying to revert to "pure socialism" in recent months, but nobody wants it. Cubans have satellite dishes (illegal) and they can see on TV how much better the dirty capitalist dogs have it. Plus Fidel's plan to improve the economy through a few allowances for individual enterprise years ago has spoiled them. They want more of it, not an end to it. Everyone is waiting patiently for him to die. Then -- fiesta!
Remember that the castro regime has profitted tremendously from the drug traffic, collecting fees for permitting transportation, and allowing wanted druggies to live in Cuba. Raoul is supposed to be deeply involved in that on behalf of his half brother, fidel.

It would be entirely appropriate if his hearse was '57 Chevy with four wobbly donut wheels. God knows that country was flash frozen in time the day that communist dictator took over.
