The Ravenous Media Maw

NB: we do not say "Adieu."

As you know, the junior Senator from Illinois is making a speech today:

Obama to Confront Racial Issues
By TOM RAUM – 54 minutes ago

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Democrat Barack Obama is seeking to distance himself from "stupid statements" by his longtime pastor that have aggravated racial divisions in the contentious Democratic primary battle. He is calling for both sides to tone down their rhetoric.

The Illinois senator is using a speech at a site near the nation's birthplace to present what his campaign said would be a comprehensive take on "race, politics, and unifying our country."

Among other things, the Illinois Democrat was seeking to calm the uproar over racially tinged sermons by his former pastor at Chicago's Trinity United Church of Christ, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, remarks that have threatened to undercut Obama's campaign theme of easing the racial divide.

Alternatively, you can go with the Washington Times' simultaneously more cynical and more accurate take on it: "Obama eyes white suburbs of Philadelphia."

I predict that, no matter how he actually does on this speech, the media will more or less take it as answering his critics, carefully fold up the whole controversy, and thriftily put it in storage. It's still a month to Pennsylvania, and this story has pretty much hit saturation point anyway. Hillary's turn, next - then maybe a quick shot at McCain, just to remind him that he's not entirely off the hook until after the conventions. Obama supporters should not necessarily breathe easier, though. Their guy is now off the pedestal. He's on the rotation to get smacked around, now.

Yes, I too look forward to seeing how he reacts to being treated as a mere human.
