Tim Mahoney

Posted at 9:58am on Jul. 5, 2008 Tim Mahoney (D-FL) spends Independence Day in Canada after honoring Soviet vets in taxpayer-funded mailer

By Jeff Emanuel

Democrat Congressman Tim Mahoney (FL-16), fresh off the embarrassment of getting caught being so out of touch with America's military that he sent out a taxpayer-funded mailpiece "in honor of those who defend our freedom" featuring a photo of a Soviet veteran, decided to get out of the spotlight for a few days during the Independence Day recess.

Unfortunately for Mahoney, while a Congressman may be able to leave the country for a few days, the spotlight is rarely far behind -- especially when the time you choose to leave the country and chill at your second house in Canada coincides with America's Independence Day, and your constituents -- and your opponent -- are dedicating time and energy to celebrating that most special of holidays.

Further, Tim Mahoney's Web site contained no acknowledgment of the 4th of July in any way.

Perhaps Mahoney is far more in line ideologically, and patriotically, with The Progressive magazine's Matthew Rothschild, who wrote:

Why I’m Not Patriotic

By Matthew Rothschild, July 2, 2008
(In memory of George Carlin.)

It’s July 4th again, a day of near-compulsory flag-waving and nation-worshipping. Count me out.

Spare me the puerile parades.

Don’t play that martial music, white boy.

And don’t befoul nature’s sky with your F-16s.

You see, I don’t believe in patriotism.

It’s not that I’m anti-American, but I am anti-patriotic.

Love of country isn’t natural. It’s not something you’re born with. It’s an inculcated kind of love, something that is foisted upon you in the home, in the school, on TV, at church, during the football game.

Yet most people accept it without inspection.

In fairness to Mr. Mahoney, he may not agree with this; however, he was in Canada on July 4 and therefore unavailable for comment. Perhaps Mahoney simply doesn't believe in patriotism -- or his vision of "the New Patriotism" is so far out of touch with mainstream America's, and with the citizens of FL-16, that he thinks escaping the commemoration of what is the most important patriotic holiday of the year is something his constituents will neither mind nor notice.

Posted at 10:47am on Jul. 1, 2008 Democrat Congressman Tim Mahoney (FL-16): Honoring Those Who Defended the Soviet Union [Updated]

By Jeff Emanuel

[Update-7/1/08@1012CDT: Asked about the photo by Cox Newspapers-Washington, Mahoney spokeswoman Leslie Pollner-Levey said, “We’d like more time to respond. We’re looking into it.”

That tone changed quickly. When the staff realized the magnitude of their error, Charles Halloran, Mahoney's chief of staff, had this to say: “This was an honest staff error. We deeply apologize to those who were offended and we will take steps to ensure that this mistake doesn’t happen in the future.”

Kudos to them for being willing to "take steps to ensure that this mistake doesn’t happen in the future." After all, getting it right the first time -- which could have been ensured had one single U.S. military veteran been shown the mailpiece supposedly "honoring" veterans before it was sent out.

Sometimes it takes a massive screw-up to teach folks to kick the laziness habit and reinforce attention to detail, I suppose.]

Tim Mahoney, freshman Democrat Congressman from Florida, really, really loves the troops. Remember last March, when he responded to questions about whether or not the 'surge' in Iraq would work by famously saying "So what"? Well, forget it -- Tim Mahoney loves the troops, and don't you dare think otherwise.

“Mahoney loves the troops so much that neither he nor his staff could tell the difference between an American veteran and a former soldier in Stalin's Red Army.”

He loves them so much that he wants every person in his district to know how much he loves, and honors, the efforts, dedication, and sacrifices of those who defend our freedom.

He loves them so much that he recently sent out a taxpayer-funded mailpiece titled "Honoring Those Who Defend Our Freedom" (viewable here in .pdf form, and here with Staff Advisory Opinion attached).

Posted at 3:16pm on Jun. 24, 2008 Rooney Gets A Big Endorsement

By Erick

RedState endorsed Tom Rooney has gotten another huge conservative endorsement today.

The House Conservative Fund has picked Tom as its preferred candidate to take on Congressman Mahoney.

This is huge because the House Conservative Fund is backed by the conservative members of the Republican Study Committee. The primary is August 26th.

If you can, please consider sending Tom a donation.

Posted at 10:56pm on Jun. 19, 2008 2 Freshman House Ds From Fla. Ripe For Defeat

By pilgrim

Promoted from the diaries by Neil Stevens...

U.S. Reps. Ron Klein (left) and Tim Mahoney (right) join Rep. Rahm Emanuel, D-Ill. for 'Let's go Communist' bill to be introduced by Rahm Emanuel, Maurice Hinchey, Ed Markey, and Nick Rahall as co-sponsors. This is what Maurice Hinchley said on the House floor June 19, 2008:

We (the government) should own the refineries. Then we can control how much gets out into the market.

On Ron Klein's website he writes:

I am working to pass legislation
that gives the oil companies an ultimatum: “Drill It or Lose It.”

On Tim Mahoney's website he writes the following:

The Responsible Federal Oil and Gas Lease Act of 2008 employs a "use it or lose it" tactic that will compel oil and gas companies to either produce or give up the federal onshore and offshore leases they are stockpiling by barring the companies from obtaining any more leases unless they can demonstrate that they are producing oil and gas, or are diligently developing the leases they already hold.

Posted at 10:16am on Jun. 9, 2008 Tim Mahoney (D-FL) Tacitly Admits He's A Chicken

By Erick

Tim Mahoney (D-FL) is running scared.

With Tom Rooney and two other Republicans gunning for him this year, Mahoney has officially declared himself too chicken to compete.

Barack Obama has effectively clinched the Democratic presidential nomination, but freshman U.S. Rep. Tim Mahoney, D-Palm Beach Gardens, isn't hopping on the bandwagon. Mahoney says he'll remain an uncommitted superdelegate through the party convention this summer. And Mahoney plans to keep a low profile in the presidential race this fall as he seeks reelection to one of the nation's most competitive congressional seats.

"I wasn't elected to be a role model as to how people should vote," Mahoney says of the presidential race. "People in my district are smart enough to decide."

Mahoney says it is not about self preservation, but we all know otherwise. Mahoney does not want to be seen as aligned with someone as radical as Barack Obama.

But he will still vote for Obama, won't he.

Posted at 2:40pm on May 8, 2008 Tim Mahoney admits he has no freaking clue about the sub-prime lending crisis

By Erick

Tim Mahoney (D-FL) is upset with Republicans for blocking the "Don't Make People Deal With The Consequences of Their Own Actions" Act also known as the sub-prime mortgage bailout.

This is just too rich:

Mahoney said Republicans have it all wrong. He said because Florida’s housing prices were so high, many families turned to sub-prime mortgages as their only avenue to get into homeownership.

Pay attention to this:

Republicans have it all wrong.

In real person speak: The Republicans don't want to bail out people who decided to live beyond their means. Everyone knows taxpayers are supposed to save the irresponsible from themselves.

Florida’s housing prices were so high

In real person speak: it was difficult for some people to buy a house because, by any objective standard used in the free market, these people could not actually afford to buy their house.

many families turned to sub-prime mortgages

In real person speak: some people who had crummy credit and wanted to live in a house they couldn't afford sought out a way to make the deal happen after banking institutions questioned the financial ability of these people to actually, you know, buy a house and pay for it. So they got into sub-prime mortgages and we should feel sorry for them and let the taxpayers bail them out now.

their only avenue to get into homeownership

In real person speak: Tim Mahoney now wants taxpayers to pay for their homeownership because, you know, living beyond your means is as American as apple pie.

Brilliant, Tim.

Posted at 9:30am on May 6, 2008 RedState Endorses Tom Rooney (FL-16). Let's take back that seat.

By The Directors

In 2006 with Mark Foley's unexpected resignation from Florida 16, the historically Republican district elected Democrat Tim Mahoney. It's time to take back the seat.

To take back Florida 16, the Republicans will need to elect someone who fits the district. It is a conservative district that stretches across the state. It is a very good fit for Tom Rooney, the conservative Republican running.

Tom Rooney is a native to the area. He and his wife both served the military in the Army JAG Corps. In 2002, Tom went to teach law at West Point before heading home to serve as an Assistant Attorney General. Tom Rooney is active in the community, serving on the Children's Services Council of Palm Beach Board of Directors, while maintaining his law practice. He, his wife, and their three sons live in Tequesta, Florida.

More importantly for us at RedState, Tom Rooney is a small government, pro-life conservative. He doesn't just want to cut taxes, he wants to cut spending. We trust Tom to remain consistently conservative when he gets to Washington, D.C.

Men like Tom Rooney are needed to take back the GOP. While we've looked at his opponents, we are convinced that Tom is the best fit for the district and is least likely to go off the conservative reservation.

RedState has also started a new vetting process. To make sure we've got a good understanding of a candidate's positions, I sent Mr. Rooney a questionnaire asking him to outline his positions on various issues -- worded to make sure he'd have to give us more than a yes or no. I think you'll agree when you review them that he is worth supporting. See the questionnaire here.

It's been some time since we've asked you to open your wallet for a candidate. We need candidates like Tom Rooney to make up ground in the Congress. Tom Rooney has the best shot at beating Congressman Mahoney, but he has to get out of his primary. So give what you can today.

And remember, the more we're willing to put our money where our mouth is, the more we'll grow in influence. For that reason, it is important for online conservative activists to give.

If you have one, add Tom Rooney to your Slatecard. If you don't have one, get a Slatecard.
